Historical Description

WHITCHURCH is a parish and village on the high road from Plymouth to Tavistock, 2 miles south-east from Tavistock station on the London and South Western railway and 12 north from Plymouth, in the Western division of the county, Roborough hundred, Tavistock petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Tavistock, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. Sortridge, formerly a detached part of Petertavy, was by Local Government Board Order, 15,033, of 25th March, 1885, added to this parish. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, with crocketed pinnacles, containing 6 bells; in the chancel is a curious old monument, dated 1617, to the Moringe family, who were formerly seated at Moortown in this parish: there is also a very fine marble tomb to the Rev. Mr. Pengelly, a former vicar of this parish, d. 1722: in the chancel are two memorial windows to the Rev. Samuel Featherstone B.A. vicar here 1878—83, and in the north aisle one to the wife and daughter of W. P. Michell esq. of Holwell, erected by him in 1883: there are piscinae in the chancel and transept: the organ was provided in 1879, at a cost of £150: the church was restored in 1878, at a cost of £1,025, and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £179, with residence and 80 acres of glebe, in the gift of D. R. Harvest esq. and Mrs. Chambers, and held since 1900 by the Rev. William Hampton Chambers M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are Bible Christian meeting houses in the village, erected in 1861. In the parish are several tin, copper and lead mines, but are not now worked. Walredon, an ancient residence, the seat of Edward John Eyre esq. is 1 ½ miles south-west. Grenofen, a modern mansion, and the seat of William Henry Chichester esq. J.P. is miles south-south-east. Holwell, the residence of George Pooley Martin esq. is an ancient mansion, pleasantly situated in well-wooded grounds of about 60 acres, half a mile north-east. Merevale belongs to the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. of Maristow, and Moor Town to William Edward George esq. of Downside, Stoke Bishop, Bristol. Thomas Bulteel esq. of Radford, who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Devon, the Duke of Bedford, Rev. Percy Turner Michell M.A. vicar of North Petherton, Somerset, William Henry Chichester esq. Rev. William Henry Wyer. Honey M.A., LL.M, rector of Raithby-cum-Hallington, Lines, and Herbert Morris Spencer esq. of Bradford, Yorks, are the principal landowners. The soil is generally light; the subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasture. The area is 6,182 acres of land, of which about 2,523 acres are uninclosed, on the borders of Dartmoor, and 24 of water; rateable value, £7,042; the population in 1891 was 1,144 in the civil and 917 in the ecclesiastical parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed February 2, 1874; J. D. Johnstone, Tavistock, clerk to the board; Thomas Winsor Whitchurch, attendance officer.

In July, 1885, by an Order in Council, Buckland Monachorum & Sampford Spiney were made contributory districts, each sending 2 members.

Board School (mixed), built in 1877, for 120 children; average attendance, 72.
