Witheridge Banns (1754-1915)

Banns registers list the names of people who intended to marry by the system of calling banns, in which the bride and groom's name were called for three weeks at church. At these callings objections could be made to a marriage. They record the bride and groom's parish of residence, which may be recorded differently in the marriage register.

Historical Description

WITHERIDGE is a parish and village on the road from South Molton to Tiverton, 7 miles north-east from Lapford station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, and about 8 south-east from Bishopsnympton station on the Barnstaple section of the Great Western railway, 10 ½ south-east from South Molton and 10 ½ west-by-north from Tiverton, in the Northern division of the county, Witheridge hundred, South Molton petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of South Molton, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is an edifice of stone in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and B bells, cast in 1754, 1800 and 1889: the clock, which chimes the quarters, was presented by the late George Cutcliffe esq. at a cost of £250: the piers of the nave arcades and the pulpit, which is beautifully carved, are both of Beer stone: the organ was enlarged in 1885 at a cost of £200: there are six stained windows, three of which are memorials: the church was repaired about 1853, and again in 1866; in 1873 it was restored at a cost of £3,200, and in 1877 was re-seated at a cost of nearly £1,000, and has 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1585. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1893 by the Rev. John Peter Benson M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and rural dean of South Moliton. The Congregational chapel, built in 1839, has 230 sittings, and there is a Bible Christian chapel, built in 1859. The poor have £14 yearly in money. There are golf links of 18 holes. A fair is held on the third Thursday in April. Dart Ralph is the property of John Tremane esq. and West Yeo of Mr. S. Cocks; Queen Dart belongs to Mr. Ayre. W. Moore esq. J. N. Pyke-Nott esq. Mr. Tucker, of Lapford, and Mr. Partridge own land here. Colleton is the property of Thomas William Charlton esq. The manor belongs to Charles Luxmoore esq. of Ashbrook Hall, Middlewich, Cheshire; that of Bradford Tracy belonged to the ancestors of Lord Sudeley, now to the Rev. J. P. Benson. The area is 6,982 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £5,069; the population in 1891 was 868 in the civil and 1,022 in the ecclesiastical parish, and in 1901, 777 in the civil parish.

By Local Government Board Order 16,345, a detached part of this parish was added to Thelbridge, in Crediton union, and by Order 16,347 other detached parts known as Yeatheridge and Little Witheridge transferred to East Worlington, March 25, 1885.

National (mixed), erected in 1846, with master’s residence, for 100 children; enlarged in 1898 for 170 children at a cost of £284; average attendance, 90; & endowed with the interest of £700, left in 1799 by Richard Melhuish & £100 by Mrs. Parkhouse.
