WITHYCOMBE RALEIGH (formerly WITHECOMBE RALEIGH) is a parish and village, bounded on the west by the broad estuary of the river Exe, 1 to 2 miles north-east from Exmouth terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway and 9 ½ south-east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Budleigh, petty sessional division of Woodbury, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The parish comprises part of the town of Exmouth, and is under the control of the Exmonth Urban District Council. The old parish church of St. John the Baptist, built in the 15th century on the site of a more ancient chapel probably erected by some member of the Raleigh family, between 1254 and 1288, and commonly called St. John’s-in-the-Wilderness, was taken down, with the exception of part of the north aisle and the detached embattled western tower with its octagonal stair turret, about 1748: these remains, all of Perpendicular date, situated in a sequestered spot, 1 ½ miles from the village, are now used as a mortuary chapel: the aisle has some windows of beautiful design and a fine timbered waggon roof: on the south side of the churchyard is an ancient and very fine yew tree, supposed to date from the Conquest, and adjoining the churchyard is the private burial ground of the Bryce family. The new church of St. John the Evangelist was built in 1864, at a cost of £5,000, on the site given by J. Wood esq. and is a cruciform building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled tower on the south side, containing a clock and 8 bells, the last two having been added in 1893: the east window is a memorial to Frances Anne, wife of Otho Cooke esq. d. April a, 1872: the west window was erected to Thomas Cobham esq. of Marley Lodge, d. Jan. 28, 1865; and there is one in the south aisle to Louisa, wife of J. B. Dawson Thomas, of Tregoes, Glamorganshire, d, May 22, 1869: there are 710 sittings. The registers date from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £182, with residence and 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Hon. M. G. Kerr Rolle, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Godfrey Pierre de Putron M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, who resides at Exmouth. There is a Wesleyan mission chapel, erected in 1884, with sittings for 150 persons. The Plymouth Brethren have a cemetery here about three-quarters of an acre in extent. The charitable institution called “Point-in-Vieww was founded in 1811 by the late Misses Parminter, and comprises dwellings for four poor aged maidens, with a small Congregational chapel and a house for the minister, erected the same year; the chapel standi in the centre, and over the door is the inscription, “Some point in View we all pursue.” Drake’s Charity provides £2 10s. yearly for apprenticing and £7 yearly for the preaching minister; Spicer’s Charity, of £11 7s. yearly, bequeathed in 1844, is distributed in money by the freeholders in vestry to such deserving poor as are not in receipt of parish relief; John Spebtigue left £100, the interest to be given in coal to the poor, and there is also Rowe’s Charity of £4 11s. 8d. for bread, and Burford’s of £5 10s. and Read’s of £1 4s. both for the poor.
