Historical Description

Woodbury, so called from the woods which anciently grew upon it, is a parish with eight small villages: the principal, denominated Church Village, lies nearly in the centre of the parish, and has a church built in 1409, and dedicated to St. Swithin.

Here, about a mile and a half from the road, is Nutwell-court, Sir Thomas Trayton Fuller Elliott Drake, Bart. This was formerly a castle, but converted into a dwelling-house in the time of Edward IV. The last possessor rebuilt this mansion on an enlarged scale, and at a great expence. The plantations also have been considerably extended.

Woodbury-castle stands on the edge of a very high hill, and is deeply entrenched.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WOODBURY is a large village and parish, near the estuary of the river Exe and the roads leading from Exeter to Exmouth and Sidmouth, 2 ¼ miles east from Woodbury Road station on the Exeter and Exmouth branch of the London and South Western railway, 7 south-east from Exeter, 3 ½ south-east from Topsham, 5 north-east from Exmouth and 178 ½ from London and is also the head of a petty sessional division, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Budleigh, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Swithin is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, erected in 1408 and containing a clock and 8 bells, 6 of which (with the exception of the fourth, which has a prayer to the Virgin in Old English characters) are respectively dated 1737, 1624, 1605, 1677 and 7629; two new bells have been added, as a memorial to the Rev. J. L. Fulford M.A. vicar 1846—1900,: the nave and tower are in the Perpendicular and the chancel in the Decorated style: in the church is a monument to Sir Henry Pollexfen kt. chief justice of the Common Pleas 1689—91, ob. June 15, 1691: in the north aisle is a flat stone, exhibiting the matrices of ancient brasses to the Haydon family: on the north side of the chancel is an altar tomb, with recumbent effigies of a knight in armour and a lady, probably representing Sir Thomas Prideaux kt. ob. 1640, and Joan (Cole), his wife: the stained east window was placed by the Misses Sanders, of Exeter, as a memorial to their parents, and there are other memorial windows to Mrs. Cowd and Col. Brent: in 1893 the church was restored at a cost of about £1,300, when the nave was new roofed, the arcade rebuilt and the high pews and the western galleries removed: there are 350 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1557; burials 1575, and is in good condition. The living is a titular vicarage, net yearly value £195, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Custos and College of Vicars Choral in Exeter Cathedral, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Robert Henry Neely B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The patrons also hold rectorial rights, the church and appurtenances having been given to them by Bishop Marshall (1196—1205). The chapel of ease in the hamlet of Exton is a small but plain building (originally a barn), with a thatched roof, and consisting only of nave and a belfry containing one bell: a choir stall and small organ were provided in 1901: there ate 78 sittings. The Free church, built in 1851, is a plain edifice of brick with a turret containing one bell and will seat 200 persons. There is a small Unitarian chapel in the hamlet of Gulliford, erected in 1774, with an endowment of about £75 yearly from Lady Hawley’s charity, but now closed. The charities include Geare’s of £1,000, given in 1885; Hayman’s of £504, in 1833; Spicer’s of £100, in 1853; Ware’s of £4 10s. yearly, given in 1691, and distributed in prizes at the school; and there is also a sum of £5 for bread and about £12 derived from lands. Here is a tannery and a malting establishment, and at Ebford a manufactory of nitro-phosphate manure belonging to the Odams Chemical Co. The Woodbury Fire Brigade, which is under the control of the Parish Council, has an engine station, erected in 1885, and a manual engine and hose; a new engine was provided in 1900, at a cost of about £150. On the lofty summit of Woodbury common, which overlooks the Exe and Otter valleys, and commands a fine view of the sea, are the remains of an ancient entrenchment called “Woodbury Castle,” of British or Saxon origin. Nutwell Court, an elegant modern mansion on the estuary of the river Exe, surrounded by trees and shrubberies, with a park extending over 76 acres, is the seat of Sir Francis George Augustus Fuller-Eliot-Drake bart. The Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle, who is lord of the manor, Sir F. G. A. Fuller-Eliot-Drake bart. William Ashford esq. of Heavitree and Mrs. Brent-Spencer are the chief landowners, but there are several small freeholders. The soil is clay and good marl; subsoil, clay with large pebble. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and peas; turnips, swedes, mangolds, potatoes and apples are largely grown. The area is 6,720 acres of land, including 734 of common, 8 of tidal water and 336 of foreshore; rateable value, £10,418; the population in 1901 was 1,517.

By a Local Government Board Order, No. 16,545, which came into operation March 25, 1884, a detached part of this parish, known as Great and Little Houndbere, was amalgamated with Aylesbeare.
