Historical Description

YARCOMBE is a village and parish on the borders of Somerset, about 7 miles north-east from Honiton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway and 6 west from Chard, in the Eastern division of the county, Axminster hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, Chard union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells. The church was restored in 1891 at a cost of £2,300, under the direction of Mr. Samson, architect, of Taunton, and contains a carved oak reredos, and a memorial to the late Lady Drake. The register dates from the year 1551. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1900 by the Rev. George Forrester Watson M. A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here are two Baptist chapels, one erected in 1845 and the other in 1830.

The charities are of £46 yearly value. Sheafhayne House, the property of Sir F. G. A. Fuller-Eliot-Drake bart. of Buckland Abbey, who is lord of the manor and chief landowner, is the residence of Lionel Patton esq. J.P. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 5,237 acres; rateable value, £5,178; the population in 1901 was 578 in the civil, and 625 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.

By Local Government Board Order 15,948, the tithing of Birch Oak was amalgamated with this parish from Membury in Axminster union, March 24, 1884.
