Historical Description

YEALMPTON, or Yampton, is a parish and village, pleasantly situated, with a station on the new line of the London and South Western railway from Plymstock to this place; it is 5 miles south-east from Plympton station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway and 7 south-east from Plymouth, in the Southern division of the county, Plympton hundred, Ermington and Plympton petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union, East Stonehouse county court district, rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The river Yealm runs through the parish and flows into the sea at Wembury. The church of St. Bartholomew is a building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: four of the windows are stained: it was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1850, at a cost of about £7,000, defrayed by the late Edmund Rodney Pollexfen Bastard esq. to whom there is a memorial window, erected by his friends and tenants: the columns which separate the nave and aisles are alternately of polished and rough marble of various colours: the screen between the chancel and nave is of carved marble, and the communion table consists of a carved oak frame, supporting a massive marble slab quarried in the locality: the font is of the same material and the walls are inlaid with marbles of various kinds: in the north aisle is a brass, with effigy in armour, and inscription to Sir John Crokker, cup and standard bearer to King Edward IV. who distinguished himself in suppressing Perkin Warbeck’s rebellion in 1497; ob. 13 March, 1508. The register dates from the year 1630. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Henry James Warner M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan Methodis t chapel. At Yealmbridge are the chair, cabinet and flock works of Mr. Samuel Snawdon; these are worked by water power, and employ a large number of hands; there are also marble and granite works, and severed limestone quarries. An important oyster-rearing industry has sprung up on the estuary of the Yealm, the sandy bottom of the upper part which is entirely free from sewage matter, being admirably suited for this purpose. In 1858 Charles Anthony bestowed £36 yearly for clothes, bedding, coals and to provide necessaries for the sick poor; and at his death left £60 yearly to clothe 6 old men and 6 old women and for educating and clothing 30 children. A cattle market is held the fourth Wednesday in each month. A Sessions House and Police Station was built in 1864. There is a reading room and library, supported by subscriptions. Kitley, a fine Elizabethan mansion on the estuary of the Yealm, and containing a good collection of paintings, is the seat of Baldwin John Pollexfen Bastard esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and principal landowner; the family of the present owner has been seated in Devonshire since the period of the Norman Conquest. The soil is light; and the subsoil, limestone and marble in great variety. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,164 acres of land, 27 of water, 6 of tidal water and 71 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,704; the population in 1891 was 879.
