Historical Description

AFPPUDDLE (or Affpiddle), formerly called Aspundell, is a parish on the river Trent or Piddle, 3 ¾ miles north from the Moreton station on the Bournemouth and Dorchester section of the London and South-Western railway, 8 east-by-north from Dorchester and 10 northwest from Wareham, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Hundredsbarrow, Wareham petty sessional division and county court district, union of Wareham and Purbeck, rural deanery of Whitchurch (Bere Regis portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese o'f Salisbury. The church of St. Laurence is an ancient structure of stone and flint, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle, south porch and a Decorated embattled western tower with pinnacles of the reign of Edward IV. containing 4 large bells; it was originally appropriated to the Abbey of Cerne, and at the dissolution of that house the vicarage was given to Thomas Lyllyngton, one of the monks of that body, who caused the beautiful carved oak pulpit and seats to be erected in the church; on the end of one of the seats is a carved inscription bearing date 1547: there is also a Norman font: the trefoil arch of the south entrance to the church is of the date 1220: the west window is stained and was inserted in 1880 by the late Mrs Frampton, to the memory of Henry Frampton esq. of Moreton House: the church was restored in 1878, and has 220 sittings The register dates from the year 1731. The living in 1547 was a vicarage, but in 1849 the rectory of Toners Puddle and the vicarage of Affpuddle were united by order in Council; average tithe rent-charge £160, net income £185, with 4 acres of glebe and residence in the gift of the representatives of the late Mrs. Frampton, and held since 1869 by the Rev, Henry Peere Williams-Freeman M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. Children of this parish are apprenticed from Frampton’s charity, of Moreton. Mrs. Fetherstonhaugh-Frampton is lady of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,818 acres; rateable value, £2,750; the population in 1891 was 434.

On Bladen Heath and the other heaths are many curious pits and barrows. At Clouds Hill are barrows. The hamlets in this parish-which is intersected by the Piddle-are Pallington hamlet, 1 ½ miles south ; Bryants Puddle tithing, 1 mile east; Oakers Wood, 1 mile south east; Rogers Hill, 1 mile north-east; and Waddock, 1 ½ miles south.

School, Bryants Puddle, was built at the cost of the late H. Frampton esq. in 1870, for the children of Toners Puddle & those of this parish, for 100 children; average attendance, 66.
