Historical Description
ASHMORE is a small parish on the borders of Wiltshire, 9 miles south from Semley station on the Salisbury and Yeovil line of the London and South-Western railway, 6 south-east from Shaftesbury and 9 ½ north of Blandford, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Cranborne, petty sessional division of Shaftesbury, union and county court district of Shaftesbury, rural deanery of Pimperne (Blandford portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Nicholas (built on the site of the old church) is of stone, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave and north aisle: vestry on the north side of the chancel, and south porch: the aisle is divided from the nave by two arches resting on a circular pier ; the chancel flooring is of Devonshire marble; there is a font of Beer stone, and a pulpit of oak, elaborately carved: there are four stained windows, one at the south side of the nave of two lights, representing Christ Feeding His Sheep and Restoring Sight to the Blind, and is the gift of E H. Howard esq.; the church will seat 160 people and was opened October 2nd, 1874. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £240, gross yearly value £300, net £200, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lieut.-Col. Samuel Lloyd Howard C. B. and David Howard esq. J. P. of Essex, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Williamson Peile of St. Aidan’s.
Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1855. Lieut.-Col. Samuel Lloyd Howard C. B., D. L., J. P. of Goldings, Loughton, Essex and of The Cottage, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is chalk and loam; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. There is a large portion of woodland which gives a considerable employment in the production of faggots and hurdles; a large quantity of flint for road making is also obtained from this parish. The area is 2,301a. 0r. 32p.; rateable value, £1,318; and the population in 1891 was 228.
Hats Barn is 1 mile north-west. On the downs are barrows.
National School (mixed), with residence for mistress, built in 1840 for 95 children; average attendance, 50; Miss Martha Plowman, mistress.
