BATCOMBE is a parish and a small straggling village 2 ½ miles east from Evershot station on the Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, about 12 northwest from Dorchester and 4 north-west from Cerne Abbas, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Yetminster, Cerne union and petty sessional division, Dorchester county court district, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Sherborne portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary is a small Gothic structure of stone, restored in 1864, and consisting of chancel and nave, north porch, with embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 2 bells: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1813. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Frome Vauchurch; average tithe rent charge £223, joint gross yearly value £320, net £260, in the gift of the Earl of Sandwich, and held by the Rev. Frederick Phipps B.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, who resides at Frome Vauchurch. The Earl of Sandwich is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil and subsoil are chalk and clay. The land is mostly in pasture. The area is 1,109 acres, inclusive of 33 acres of glebe; rateable value £914; the population in 1891 was 123.
