BEER HACKETT is a parish, on a small stream which flows into the Yeo, 1 mile north from Yetminster station, on the Weymouth, branch of the Great Western railway, 4 miles south-west from Sherborne and 5 south-east from Yeovil, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, union and petty sessional division of Sherborne, Yeovil county court district, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Sherborne portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Michael is a stone building of the Early English, style, consisting of chancel, nave and south porch, with a western tower, containing 4 bells: it was rebuilt in 1882, with the exception of the tower, at a cost of about £1,100, raised by subscription: the east window is stained and is a memorial to the Rev. Frank Newington B.A. vicar of Osmington, who died October 10, 1877: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1549. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £117, gross yearly value £177, net £155, including 38 acres of glebe, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Wilfrid Roxby B.A. of Emmanuel college, Cambridge, who is also rector of, and resides at, Thornford. The principal landowner is John Kenelm Digby Wingfield-Digby esq. M.P., J.P. who is lord of the manor as successor of the abbots of Sherborne; he is owner of the rectorial tithes, £6 yearly from tithes. The soil is clay; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are pasture; the area is 918 acres ; rateable value, £1,472 ; the population in 1891 including the tithing of Knighton, 1 mile south-east, was 85.
