Historical Description
BLOXWORTH (or Blocksworth) is a parish, about 6 miles north-by-west from Wareham station on the London and South Western railway, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Coombs Ditch, Wareham petty sessional division and county court district, union of Wareham and Purbeck, rural deanery of Whitchurch (Poole portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Andrew was originally a Norman structure, of which the only portion now existing is the entrance doorway: it was rebuilt in the 14th century, partly in the Pointed, partly in the Decorated style; subsequently-probably towards the end of the 17th century, or perhaps earlier-it was again rebuilt in its present substantial though debased Gothic form; portions of the earlier rebuilding are here curiously mixed in and utilized: at that time also the chancel appears to have been rebuilt, out of (at any rate in part) the materials of the body of the church: it consists of chancel, nave and south porch: it has a square embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 2 bells, one of which is of the 14th century, and around the rim is an inscription which consists of the words Sancta Maria in capital letters separated by crosses: it contains several memorials to the Trenchard and Pickard families, and the manorial pew has fresco armorial designs belonging to the Savages, lords of the manor previous to the year 1700: the chancel was rebuilt in 1870; and the nave was reseated and a new pulpit erected in 1887 by the present rector: this is one of the very few churches where the original hour glass and stand by which, after the Reformation, the length of the sermon was regulated, still exists: at the restoration of the chancel in 1870 all that was possible of the old building was retained: there are 125 sittings. The register dates from the year 1579. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £213, gross yearly value £280, net £180, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Col. J. Pickard-Cambridge, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Octavius Pickard-Cambridge M.A. of University College, Durham, F. R. S. who is also rector of Winterborne Thompson. On the heath are Woolbarrow, or Oldbury, an ancient British camp, and other barrows. Col. Jocelyn Pickard-Cambridge J.P. who resides at Bloxworth House, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The parish comprises a strip of land, about 3 ½ miles by 1 ¼, between the parishes of Morden and Bere Regis, running north and south; the soil if the northern portion is chalk, of the middle, clay, and of the southern part gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat and barley; the extent is 2,776 acres of cultivated, wood and heath lands; rateable value, £1,608; the population in 1891 was 260.
School (mixed), with house for mistress, built in 1874, for 60 children; average attendance, 45.
