Historical Description

BOURTON is a parish on the river Stour, 3 miles south-west from Mere, 4 north-west from Gillingham station on the London and South Western railway, 4 east from Wincanton station on the Midland and South Western junction railway and 9 north-west from Shaftesbury, in the Northern division of the county, liberty of Gillingham, Gillingham petty sessional subdivision and county court district, Mere union, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Shaftesbury portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. At the north end of Bourton, the counties of Dorset, Somerset and Wilts meet; the place is marked by a boundary stone. The church of St. George was rebuilt in 1878-9; it is in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and one bell: there is a good organ with two manuals, and sittings for upwards of 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1810. The living, formerly a chapelry of Gillingham, is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £260, gross yearly value £390, net £270, with residence in the gift of 12 trustees but pro hac vice the vicar of Gillingham, and held since 1871 by the Rev. George Glover M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here are chapels for Baptists and Wesleyams, the latter of which was rebuilt in 1888, on the old site, at a cost of £500: it is a substantial building of stone with red brick dressings. Here are the widely known engineering works of Mr. E. S. Hindley, which give employment to a great number of hands; also two quarries, yielding blue and sand stone, suitable for building purposes. Formerly there were large silk cloth factories in the village, but now all are closed. The Right Hon. Lord Stalbridge is lord of the manor. Charles Hannam and E. S. Hindley esqrs. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, day. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 890 acres; rateable value, £3,543; the population in 1891 was 782.
