Historical Description

BRADPOLE is a parish, partly within the borough of Bridport, situated between the rivers Brit and Asker, 5 miles south from Beaminster, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Beaminster Forum, Bridport union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Bridport (Bridport portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of the Holy Trinity is a building of stone, rebuilt in 1845-6, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, with tower and a spire containing a peal of 5 bells: there is a carved stone pulpit, given by Alexander A. M. Broadley esq. in 1888 to commemorate the jubilee of the late Canon Broadley’s ordination: there are also in the chancel two handsome stained windows to the late Canon Broadley and a memorial brass recording the rebuilding of the church and the chapel of ease of St. Andrew and the erection of the vicarage house, the schools and the Forster institute, during his incumbency 1844-94: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £198, gross yearly value £264, net £196, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Henry Cromwell Beckwith Field M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. In the churchyard wall is a white marble tablet, erected in 1888 by A. M. Broadley esq. to call to remembrance the birth in this village, in 1818, of the late Right Hon. W. E. Forster; the cottage in which he was born is still standing and bears his name. On a site adjoining the vicarage, given by the late vicar, a reading room and library, in memory of the late W. E. Forster, was built in 1889 by public subscription. In the village, at St. Andrew’s Well, there is a substantial building, used for parochial purposes, and called St. Andrew’s house. There is no manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Way and Mr. Compton. The Knap, a handsome house, built after designs by C. V. Johnson esq. architect, and situate on an eminence near the church, is the residence of Mrs. Broadley and A. M. Broadley esq. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and some land in pasture. The area is. 998 acres; rateable value, £7,773; and the population in 1891 was 1,641, including 131 officers and inmates of the Bridport workhouse; the population included in the municipal borough of Bridport in 1891 was 864.
