Historical Description

In the Parish of Broadway, we find the small hamlet of Nottington, famous for its medicinal spring, extremely serviceable in cutaneous and scorbutic disorders. It has a strong sulphureous smell, though perfectly limpid, and acts chiefly on the urinary passages. It appears from analysis to contain hepatic, phlogistigated and fixed air, the digestive salt of Silvius, vegetable alkali, magnesia, &c, and strongly resembles the Moffatt water in Scotland. Combined with sea-bathing, under the direction of a judicious physician, it may be extremely efficacious in many cases of human infirmity.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BROADWAY (or Broadwey) is so named because here the river Wey, rising at Upway, broadens: it is a pleasant village, 3 miles north from Weymouth stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, 5 south from Dorchester, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Culliford Tree, petty sessional division of Dorchester, union and county court district of Weymouth, rural deanery of Dorchester (Weymouth portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The Great Western and South Western railways pass through the parish; there being two stations, one for Upway; the Broadway one is on the Abbotsbury branch. The mineral spring, the Nottington Spa, is situated here; it rises at Nottington on the margin of the river Wey; the water is of that quality termed hepatic or sulphureous, but it has fallen into disuse as a medicinal spring. Roman remains have been found in several parts of the parish. The church of St. Nicholas is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, and was enlarged by the addition of a chancel aisle, and partially re-seated, an organ erected, and an east memorial window inserted, in 1874: it now consists of chancel, chancel aisle, clerestoried nave, with north aisle, a south porch with Norman arch inside, and it is remarkable for a Norman door and ancient timber roof, also a Norman font and oak pulpit of Elizabethan date: there is a western bell turret containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 450: in the churchyard is a monument containing two portrait medallions by the celebrated sculptor, F. C. Burnard esq. in memory of his daughter and brother-in-law. The register dates from the year 1661. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Bincombe; average tithe rent-charge £357, joint gross yearly value £437, net £305, with 42 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Caius College, Cambridge, and held since 1890 by the Rev. David Long M.A. formerly fellow of that college. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1839, to hold 120: also a very fine temperance hall, erected in 1879; it will seat 500 people, and has reading and coffee rooms attached. A reading room and institute was opened in 1893. The principal landowners are the Rev. J. M. Bridge and Dr. Goodden; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are hay, wheat the latter is lord of the manor. The soil is heavy clay; and barley. The area is 1,029 acres; rateable value, £4,480; the population in 1891 was 774.

Little Moor, a quarter of a mile east, is a hamlet; Nottington hamlet, 1 ¼ miles south-west, is partly in Buckland Ripers parish.

Parish school, built in 1871 & infant class room added in 1894, will now accommodate 180 children; average attendance, 140; boys’.
