Historical Description
Charmouth, a beautiful village, in a very romantic situation, commanded by lofty hills at each end. This delightful village occupies an elevated situation, and consequently commands many vast and beautiful prospects both of sea and land. It has also the advantage of being a considerable thoroughfare, and laying so near Lyme, it is much resorted to by bathers. The beach is pebbly, and in all its advantages and disadvantages, Charmouth partakes of the qualities of its neighbour and rival. The fisheries at both places present a constant scene of useful activity. Not far from hence the river Char empties itself into the sea. It is a small but remarkably agreeable place, enjoying a fine sea air. "The cliffs, which are chiefly composed of indurated marl, abound with madrepore, ammonites, belemnite, and skeletons of fishes, and other animals, in a fossil state. The Ludus Helmonti is common here, and it is difficult to persuade the vulgar that it is not a fossil turtle. All curious productions of this nature are diligently collected by a man living at Charmouth, who is generally known throughout the county by the name of the Curiman. There is a good deal of pyrites and bituminous matter in the soil, which has often taken fire after heavy rains, and produced an appearance of flames at a distance. A remarkable instance of this is recorded by Mr. Hutchins, in the following words: "In August 1531, after very hot weather, followed by sudden rains, the cliffs near Charmouth began to smoke, and soon after to burn with a visible but subtle flame. The same phenomena were observed at intervals, especially after rains, till winter; the flame, however, was not visible by day, except the sun shone, when the cliffs appeared at a distance as if covered with pieces of glass, which reflected the rays; at night the flame was visible at a distance : but when the spectator drew near, he could perceive only smoke. On examining the cliffs, a great quantity of martial pyrites was found with marcasites, that yielded near a tenth of common sulphur, shells, and the belemnites, all incrusted with pyritical matter. These substances were interspersed in large masses through the earth, which consisted of a dark-coloured loam, impregnated with bitumen to the depth of forty feet. There was also found a dark-coloured substance, like coal cinder, which being powdered and washed, and the water slowly evaporated to a pellicle, its salts, which shot into crystals, appeared to be a martial vitrol." The shore is bold and rugged quite to Lyme, the projecting parts being daily diminished by the force of the waves, and indeed the numerous springs that gush out of them hasten their downfal.
CHARMOUTH is a pleasant watering place on the shore of the English channel, a village and parish, 6 miles south-east from Axminster station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 6 west from Bridport terminal station on a branch of the Great Western railway, 2 east from Lyme Regis and 146 from London, in the Western division of the county, Whitchurch hundred, Bridport petty sessional division, Axminster union and county court district, rural deanery of Bridport (Lyme portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury: it is on the high road between Dorchester and Exeter, and takes its name from the river Char, a small stream which flows through the valley near which it is built: it is a place of great antiquity, being on a branch of the trackway called Ikeneld Street, which left Morcombelake and passed through Charmouth and Lyme Regis, over the hills to Colyford, Sidbury, Woodbury Castle and Exeter. The views around are extremely beautiful, especially from the eastern cliff-Cain’s Folly. Golden Cap Hill, one of the most lofty, is 600 feet high. The river Char produces some fine trout, and the beach and cliffs near the Black Ven Hills and the Golden Cap are interesting to the geologist. During 1864 a fine specimen of a new species of Plesiosaurus Rostratus (Owen) was discovered here by E. C. H. Day esq. F. G. S. and purchased of him for the British Museum: ammonites are found in great quantities. On the western cliffs is the Great Gun battery, the coastguard station is in Charmouth. During the time the Romans occupied Dorsetshire, this place was one of their stations and called Carca Arixa; in 833 great battles were fought between King Egbert’s army and the Danes, who landed from thirty-five ships and made great slaughter: in 841 there was another great battle between the Northmen and King Ethelwold. In 1651 Charles II. when endeavouring to escape to France, narrowly escaped arrest here: it is much frequented by visitors from its peculiar advantages', the mildness of the climate and the purity of the sea water. The church of St. Andrew is a building of flint and stone, erected on the site of the old one in 1836 and improved in 1861, consists of clerestoried nave with five bays and having a recess for the communion table, aisles, north porch and square western tower containing 3 bells and a clock: the roof is supported by octagonal columns: the church is lighted by lancet windows; that in the east, three in the north aisle and three in the south aisle are stained; one in the south is in memory of Mary, eldest daughter of the Rev. E. R. Breton, who died June 15th, 1865, aged 19; another in the south aisle was erected by Mrs. H. C. Breton in 1878 to her husband, the Rev. E. R. Breton; and the third window in the south, in memory of Charles E. B. Breton, capt. 4th King’s Own, and son of the rector: two of the windows in the north aisle and that over the porch, were inserted by Mrs. Stuart 1 and a third window to the memory of Andrew Tucker, erected by his widow: at the back of the communion table is a richly carved reredos: in the gallery at the west end is a fine toned organ: there are some interesting mural monuments, removed from the old church: the fine marble font was given by the Misses Stuart in 1886 in memory of their mother, and a pulpit of Caen stone with Irish marble pillars, erected in 1885, in memory of Captain Bullen R. N. and his wife: the church will seat nearly 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £88, gross yearly value £114, net £78, inclusive of 4 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Frederick Seager Hunt bart. M.P. and held since 1883 by the Rev. William Ward Nicholls. The rector house is on the south side, through the churchyard. The Congregational church was founded in 1689, rebuilt in 1815 and restored in 1866: in 1878 new gates and iron pilasters were added, the gallery reseated and the church fresh stuccoed. The almshouses are for the benefit of the poor of the parish. Next to the Congregational church is a house of great antiquity, with heavy oak ceilings, arches and a very large chimney: this house was originally the Queen’s Arms Inn, and after the battle of Worcester Charles II. slept here and was also here concealed in the chimney when the house was searched by Cromwell’s soldiers; the principal room in it is 40 feet long by 20 feet broad; this house is also celebrated as being the place where the late Dean Alford went to school, as mentioned in the history of his life by Stopford Brooke. The principal hotel is the “Coach and Horses.” John James Coulton esq. is lord of the manor. The chief landowners are John Hawkshaw esq. Mrs. Schalch, Lieut.-Col. J. B. S. Bullen and Mrs. Smyth-Boteler. The soil is light sandy loam; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats; the area is 414 acres, of which 85 are water and foreshore; rateable value, £2,477; the population in 1891 was 530.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 1 May, 1878 for the united district of Catherstone, Leweston & Charmouth; Rev. W. W. Nicholls, hon. clerk; Thomas Larcombe, attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), built in 1871 & enlarged in 1881 at a cost of £350, for 140 children; average attendance, 110.
