Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
At Chilcomb, on the top of a hill, is a large fortification, 1380 feet by 672, the area of which is several acres. It has a single low rampart, and a shallow ditch; in the middle two or three small barrows. The entrances are on the north and south, The form is square on the north, oval on the south, and irregular on the east and west. The hill is very steep, but accessible on the north and south; it commands a very extensive prospect, and is one of the most extensive camps in this part of the country." It is supposed to have been the work of the Saxons.
CHILCOMBE is a parish, bounded on the south by the river Bride or Bredy, 4 ¾ miles east-by-south from Bridport terminal station, on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Uggscombe, Bridport petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Bridport (Bridport portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church (not dedicated) is a very small stone structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and western bell cot containing one bell; there is a two-light stained window on the south side and another stained window at the west end of the nave, erected in 1895 by Frederick Samways esq. to his father, George Samways, who died Dec. 9, 1870; the font is a curious Early Norman example, on the outer rim is a double cable moulding and foliage and other tongueshaped ornaments rising round the bottom of the bowl; the reredos is an ancient cedar panel in an oak frame and supposed to have belonged to the Spanish Armada; there is a trefoil-headed piscina; there are mural tablets to the Bishop family, dated 1616 and 1692; and a stone on the floor bears the date 1692, with an inscription to E. Waddon; there are 40 sittings. The register dates from the year 1813. The living is a discharged rectory; Samways Frederick, farmer, Manor house average tithe rent-charge, £75 ; gross yearly value, £104; net, £97, in the gift of Rear-Admiral the Hon. M. H. Nelson, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Alexander Montgomery Furlonge M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, who resides at Bradpole road, Bridport. The Manor house of the Bishops, long since converted into a farm house, is now occupied by Mr. Frederick Samways; the house bears the date of 1578 ; adjoining the garden is a small inclosure well fenced, where human bones have at times been dug up ; it is supposed to have been an ancient place of burial; a little north of the house on the top of the hill is a large fortification 1,330 by 672 feet; it has a single low rampart and a shallow ditch. Rear-Admiral the Hon. Maurice Horatio Nelson is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats and some land in pasture. The area is 465 acres; rateable value, £500; the population in 1891 was 24.
