Historical Description

CORFE MULLEN is a parish on the river Stour, about 3 miles south-east from Sturminster Marshall station, 2 ½ miles from Poole Junction station on the Somerset and Dorset (Midland and South Western junction) railway, 2 south-west from Wimborne, 8 south east from Blandford, 6 north-west from Poole and 117 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Cogdean hundred, petty sessional division and county court district of Wimborne, Wimborne and Cranbourne union, Whitchurch rural deanery (Poole portion), Dorset archdeaconry and Salisbury diocese. A loop line in connection with the Somerset and Dorset railway from New Poole Junction to Bailey Gate station for Sturminster Marshall was opened in 1885. The church of St. Hubert is very ancient, and was repaired about 1850, and again in 1865; it is a low building of red stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch of brick and a square tower containing 4 bells: the stained east window was placed in 1894 by the family of the present rector in memory of his daughter, Miss F. S. Plumptre: there are 347 sittings. The register dates from the year 1652. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £286, gross yearly value £286, net £226, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Eton College, and held since 1858 by the Rev. Robert William Plumptre M.A. of University College, Oxford. Here are Baptist, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Phellipps’ charity of £80 yearly is derived from land in Somerset, devised in 1662 by Thomas Phellipps, and is divided into three parts, viz.:-first part, expended in bread and cheese, and distributed to the poor on the steps of the old cross in the churchyard every Sunday morning; second part, for the apprenticing and clothing poor children of the parish; the third part is presented to the incumbent of the parish. Churchill’s charity of £16, derived from Consols left in 1835 by William Churchill, is distributed in coals on the 3rd December, the founder’s birthday. The Knoll is occupied by Henry John Mills esq. Glendon is the seat of Major-General Charles Powlett Lane D.L., J.P. The manorial rights are held by St. John Coventry esq. of Hendon House. The principal landowner is Lord Wimborne. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 3,087 acres; rateable value, £3,367; the population in 1891 was 786.

East End and Lamb’s Green are 1 mile north-east.

National School, built in 1706, for 30 children, enlarged in 1823, in 1860 & in 1891, will now hold 170; average attendance, 156; partly endowed by Richard Lockyer esq. in 1730, for the gratuitous education of 30; the other children of the parish are admitted at a small fee.
