Historical Description

CORSCOMBE is a large parish, 5 miles south-west from Sutton Bingham station, on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and 5 west from Evershot station, on the Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, 4 north-east from Beaminster, 8 south-west from Yeovil and 10 north from Bridport, in the Western division of the county, hundred and union of Beaminster, petty sessional division of Bridport, county court district of Crewkerne, rural deanery of Bridport (Beaminster portion) archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary, an ancient structure of stone, in the Tudor style, with traces of Gothic work, was, with the tower, rebuilt in the 15th century; it was again rebuilt and refitted in 1746 in the barbarous taste of the period with the exception of the north porch, a very interesting feature, which was happily left intact: in 1876 the church was restored and enlarged, mainly at the expense of G. Troyte-Bullock esq. and it now consists of chancel, nava of five bays and south aisle, embattled western tower, with pinnacles, and has a good peal of 6 bells: there is a carved pulpit of Caen stone and marble, given by the late George Bullock esq. in 1883, as a memorial of his wife, who died in the year 1866: there is also a fine stained east window to the memory of Edward Berkeley Troyte LL.D. and a stained west window: there are 226 sittings. The register dates from the year 1595; part is not legible. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £463, gross yearly value £442 net£430, with 52 acres of glebe land and residence, in the gift of F. R. Cope esq. of Armagh, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Robert Reid Arthur Doolan B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who is also perpetual curate of Tollerwhelme. A reading room, furnished with papers and periodicals, for the use of the men and boys, is established in the village, and supported by the rector. Two fairs are held in the year at Toller Down, in this parish, on the 18th of May and the 7th of September. George Troyte Chafyn-Grove esq. is lord of the manor, and owns a large portion of the parish. The other landowners are the Rev. William Pope, of Godmanstone, the Earl of Sandwich and Mr. William Snaydon. The soil varies, and the land is principally used for dairy purposes. The area is 4,918 acres; rateable value, £5,159; the population in 1891 was 623, including 65 in Toller Whelme.

Benville is 1 ½ miles south-east; Pinnys, or Toller Whelme, 2 ½ miles south.
