Historical Description
Cranborne, a small market-town, in the hundred of the same name, 94 miles from London; remarkable in the Saxon and Norman times, for "its monastery, chace, and Lords." It is a pleasant clean place, and the surrounding country very beautiful. The Monastery was founded by one Haylward de Mean, and was afterwards annexed to the Abbey of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, long before the dissolution of religious houses.
The parish of Cranborne is the largest in the whole county, being full forty miles in circuit, and twelve miles in length. Part of the ancient Castle or Mansion-House still remains. The Church, which is situated at the west end of the town, was the Priory Church, and is supposed to be the oldest in the county, as well as the largest.
On the Castle Hill, a little south of the town, is a circular fortification, in the area of which is a well; and on the downs near it are several barrows.
The Chase extends into Wiltshire, and has been such by prescription, having been deemed a forest.
Cranborne contains 144 houses, and 816 inhabitants, chiefly employed in agriculture. The town is divided into three liberties; viz. the Priory, the Tithing, and Borough.
The principal offices are a constable, bailiff of the borough, and tithing-man of the priory.
The weekly market is on Thursday.
In Cranborne is a very fine old house belonging to the Marquis of Salisbury. Cranborne is the seat of-----Tregonwell, Esq.
CRANBORNE is a town and large parish, comprising the town and three hamlets, on the borders of Wiltshire and Hampshire; the town is 4 miles north from Verwood and 4 north-west from Daggons Road stations, on the Salisbury and Dorset branch line of the London and South Western railway, 10 north-west from Ringwood, 100 from London and 10 north from Wimborne, in the Eastern division of the county, petty sessional division and county court district of Wimborne, hundred of its name, Wimborne and Cranborne union, rural deanery of Pimperne (Wimborne portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The Chase, formerly belonging to Lord Rivers, was disfranchised in 1830; the river Crane flows through the parish. The church of SS. Mary and Bartholomew (once attached to a monastery, founded about the year 080) is a building of stone in mixed styles, from Norman to Perpendicular, one of the oldest, as well as one of the largest in the county: it contains a chancel (rebuilt in 1875 by the Marquess of Salisbury), nave, aisles with six bays, north porch, with a Norman doorway and large square embattled western tower containing 8 bells, 2 of which were added in 1890: it has been repaired and reseated with open benches, at an expense of upwards of £700, raised by a loan on the security of the rates, and by subscription : a clock was placed in the tower, at an expense of £150, and an organ was added in 1880, at a cost of £400: the west window is filled with stained glass, to commemorate Bishop Stillingfleet, who was born here in 1635; the subject representing the bishop in the centre, with figures on either side of St. Dunstan and Abbot Parker; the cost, about £140, defrayed by subscription : the stained south window is a memorial to the late John Tregonwell esq. (d. October 12th, 1885), and in the north aisle there is a fine monument (repaired by the Earl of Malmesbury in 1817) to Sir Edward Hooper and family: there are 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1602. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Boveridge annexed, average tithe rent-charge £63, joint gross yearly value £138, net £120, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Salisbury K.G. and held since 1888 by the Rev. Frank Hugh Fisher M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel. This parish formerly was the largest in the county, extending as it did from north to south nearly 13 miles; in 1894 it was divided into three separate parishes, respectively Cranborne, Alderholt and Verwood; Cranborne now includes Boveridge, Daggons, Holwell and Blagdon, mostly scattered, and, although styled hamlets, having no distinctive character to entitle them to such an appellation. Salisbury Hall, opened in 1894, which will seat about 300 persons, is used for meetings, concerts &c. Petty sessions for the Cranborne sub-division of Wimborne are held at the Foresters’ Hall, Cranborne, once a month, for list of magistrates and places in the division, see Wimborne. A fair is held annually, on the 6th of December, for pleasure. Here is a charity, called Hutchin’s, for providing greatcoats, in December, for a number of poor men; and another charity was in 1831 founded by John Miles, to give 3s. 6d. weekly each to four poor men and four poor women in this parish. At Boveridge are almshouses for five aged persons, who have each a weekly allowance of 5s. Cranborne is a place of great antiquity, and was of some importance in the Roman and Saxon times. On the Castle Hill, a little south of the town is a circular fortification, with a well near it, both supposed to be of Saxon origin. The family of Cecil, Marquess of Salisbury, take their second title of Viscount Cranborne from this place. The manor house is an ancient building, supposed to have been erected about the 12th century, but considerable additions and alterations were made in the reign of Henry VII. King John is said to have visited here at different times. The property was given to the Cecils by James I. and has been restored by the present Marquess of Salisbury; the west wing was added in the reign of James I. or Charles I. and it is considered that Inigo Jones (the famous architect) designed it; it is now the residence of James C. Colvin esq. Cranborne Lodge, standing in a park of 17 acres, containing some ornamental timber, and commanding a pleasant view of the country, is the residence of Mrs. Tregonwell, relict of John Tregonwell esq. D.L. The principal landowners are the Marquess of Salisbury K.G. who is lord of the manor, the Earls of Shaftesbury and Normanton & H. F. Brouncker esq. The area is 11,870 acres; rateable value, £8,686; the population in 1891 was 2,395 in the civil and 824 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Oakley and Monkton were, by Local Government Board Order, transferred to Wimborne St. Giles in 1886.
