Historical Description
FLEET is a parish and small village, taking its name from a sheet of water between the seashore and the mainland, running from Wyke Regis to Abbotsbury, about 8 miles long, and varying from a quarter of a mile to a mile in width, called the Fleet, and which is separated from the sea by the beach called Chessil bank: it is 3 ½ miles west from Weymouth and about 3 south-west from Upway station on the Weymouth branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Uggscombe, petty sessional division of Dorchester, Weymouth union and county court district, rural deanery of Dorchester (Weymouth portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury : it is open to the sea at the south-west, and suffered considerably from a storm on the 23rd November, 1824, which destroyed part of the village and most of the church: the chancel however still remains, and is used as a mortuary chapel, it contains some interesting brasses to the Mohun family. The parish church (St. Mary), a beautiful Gothic structure of stone, was erected in 1827 at the sole expense of the Rev. George Gould, the then vicar: it consists of chancel, nave and a handsome embattled western tower containing one bell: it has an ornamental roof, and the windows are stained: a stained east window representing the “Ascension” was presented by Henry Charles Goodden esq. and Sir Henry Peto bart.; in 1891 the church was greatly improved by Sir Henry Peto bart. in memory of his father Sir Samuel Morton Peto bart. M.P. d. 1889: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £23, gross income £123, net £110, with 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of Wyndham Charles Goodden esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas Morgan Bell Salter M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, who resides at Wyke Regis. Near the village is Fleet House, the property of W. C. Goodden esq. now occupied by Sir Henry Peto bart.: it is a handsome mansion, with grounds of 40 acres, and commands views of the Isle of Portland and the English Channel. Wyndham Charles Goodden esq. of Berkeley square, Clifton, Bristol, is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crop is wheat. The area is 1,385 acres; rateable value, £760; the population in 1891 was 138.
