Historical Description

FOLKE is a parish, 3 ½ miles south-east from Sherborne station on the London and South Western railway, 8 north from Cerne, 9 ½ miles east-by-south from Yeovil and 9 ½ west from Sturminster Newton, in the Northern division of the county, petty sessional division, hundred and union of Sherborne, county court district of Yeovil, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Stalbridge portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Lawrence is a stone building, which was in 1875 repaired and thoroughly restored, at a cost of upward of £1,000: it is in the Jacobean style, and consists of chancel, nave, with north and south aisles, built in the year 1628, south porch and an embattled western tower of earlier date, with pinnacles and 5 bells: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £258, gross yearly value £346, net £200, with 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury and Mrs. Allford, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Charles Maidwell Cocks M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. WesthaIl, the property of H. J. B. S. King esq. is occupied by Norman McLean esq. The principal landowners are Wanley Ellis Sawbridge-Erle-Drax esq. who is lord of the manor, J. Kenelm D. Wingfield-Digby esq. M.P. and H. J. B. S. King esq. The soil is clay and gravel; the subsoil is cornbrash. The chief crops are corn and some land in pasture. The area is 2,120 acres; rateable value, £2,689 ; the population in 1891 was 370 in the civil and 327 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Alweston is a hamlet half-a-mile north-east; Fontleroi Marsh is a farm, 1 mile east.

National School (mixed), with residence for mistress (under a committee) for 90 children; average attendance, 45.
