Historical Description

On the River Stour; one of the largest parishes in the county, occupying its northern extremity, and including an area of 64,000 acres, chiefly pasture land. In this parish there was formerly a Palace of the ancient Saxon and Norman Kings; in which Henry I. resided, and which was repaired by King John, at theexpence of the county. Near Gillingham there was formerly a very large forest, which, in Lelaod's time, was "four miles in length, and, a mile or thereabout in breadth." There was also another called Blackmoor or White-hart Forest, which anciently extended from Shaftesbury to Yeovill. "According to tradition," says Camden, "Henry I. came to hunt here, and having run down several deer, saved the life of a most beautiful stag; which T. de la Lynde, a nobleman in these parts, with his companions, afterwards took and killed. But they soon found how dangerous it is to provoke a lion : for the king being exceedingly offended, imposed a heavy fine on them; and the lands which they held remain to this day charged with an annual fine to the treasury, called white hart silver.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

GILLINGHAM is a market town of modern appearance and extensive parish and liberty, on the river Stour at its junction with Shreenwater, at the northern extremity of the county, with a station on the London and South Western railway, 4 ½ miles north-west from Shaftesbury, 6 ½ from Wincanton and 105 from London by road, in the Northern division of the county, liberty of Gillingham, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Shaftesbury, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Shaftesbury portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The town is lighted with gas by a company. Petty sessions are held here in conjunction with Shaftesbury. The church of St. Mary the Virgin was, with the exception of the chancel, rebuilt in the year 1838; it is an edifice of stone partly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of Decorated chancel with aisles, nave, aisles with galleries, south porch, lofty embattled western tower terminating in pinnacles and containing a clock and 8 bells, one of which has recently been recast and the others re-hung and refitted, and two more bells were added in 1894: all the windows in the chancel are stained: there is a fine monument with two recumbent figures dated 1625 to a former vicar named Jessop, and his brother, a physician who resided in this place; also a marble monument in the north chancel aisle to the last co-heiress of the Dirdoe family, dated 1733: the interior of the church has been lately (1889) refitted with open benches instead of pews, new communion table, seats for clergy, pulpit and lectern: there are about 850 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelries of Hilton and East and West Stower annexed, average tithe rent-charge £1,146, joint gross yearly value £1,152, net £318, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Sidney Edmund Davies M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford, and rural dean of Shaftesbury. There are chapels for Baptists, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists. The market is held every alternate Monday, and on the same day two cattle auctions are conducted by Messrs. Senior and Godwin and Mr. Allan Benjafield.
