Historical Description

HAMWORTHY is a parish and village, on a peninsula in Poole Harbour and is within the county of the town of Poole, having a station on a short branch from Hamworthy junction station on the London and South Western railway, 121 miles from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Cogdean, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Poole, rural deanery of Whitchurch (Poole portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Michael was rebuilt in 1826 of stone and stucco; much of the old material was worked up: it has Pointed windows, small chancel, nave, square embattled western tower, with pinnacles, one bell and a clock: the edifice was reseated in 1860 and has 300 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1826; of burials, 1813; the entries previous to these dates were made in the register of Lytchett Minster. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £47, net yearly value £93, including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Wimborne, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Edmond Sellon M. A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. Lord Wimborne is, lord; of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,074 acres; rateable value, £4,000; the population in 1891 was 673.

National School (mixed), erected in 1869, at the cost of Lord Wimborne, with a mistress's residence attached, for 130 children; average attendance, 90.
