Historical Description
HANDLEY (or Sixpenny Handley) is a village and parish, situated on the border of Wiltshire, 5 miles northwest from Cranborne, 8 north-west from Verwood station, on the Salisbury and Dorset branch of the London and South Western railway, 10 east from Blandford and 13 south-west from Salisbury, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of its name, division of East Shaston, petty sessional division of Wimborne, union of Wimborne and Cranborne, Blandford county court district, rural deanery of Pimperne (Blandford portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary, restored and enlarged in 1879 at a cost of £3,000, is an ancient Gothic edifice of stone and flint, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and north transept, south porch and a square western embattled tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: Within the communion rails is a tomb to John Ellis esq. d. Dec. 1579, and his wife, Dorothy, d. May, 1577, besides other members of the family: there are 396 sittings. The register dates from the year 1736. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Gussage St. Andrew annexed, average tithe rent-charge £47, gross joint yearly value £303, net £264, including 22 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Windsor, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Ernest Edward Hasluck M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. A good vicarage house of flint and stone, was erected in 1886 at a cost of £1,400, by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The Wesleyans have a chaipel at Woodcutts; the Primitive Methodist chapel, destroyed in the fire of 1892, has since been rebuilt; there are other Primitive Methodist chapels at Dean and Denland. By a calamitous fire, which broke out here at halfpast eleven on the morning of May 20, 1892, in a blacksmith and wheelwright’s shop, the main street of the village was almost totally destroyed. Fifty-two buildings were burned, including 46 occupied cottages, three unoccupied, the Primitive Methodist Chapel, and the workshops where the fire originated, and the total loss was estimated at £10,000; 186 persons were rendered homeless, the greater portion of them losing everything even down to their clothing. A repository sale is held here by Mr. Nathaniel Beni a field fortnightly on Thursdays. Lieut.-Gen. A. H. L: Fox-Pitt-Rivers is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is chalk and loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are barley, wheat and oats. The area is 5,928 acres ; rateable value, £5,163; the population in 1891 was 869.
A School Board of 5 members was formed here 19 Feb. 1873; H. W. Dibben, Wimborne Minster, clerk to the board.
Board School, built in 1873, at a cost of about £2,000, for 250 children; average attendance, 110.
