Historical Description

HILTON is a parish and village, 8 ½ miles west-south-west from Blandford station on the Midland tod South Western Junction railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Whiteway, Blandford petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitchurch (Milton portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of All Saints is a handsome edifice of flint and stone of the 16th century, in the Decorated style, having chancel, have of three bays, aisles, gallery with square western tower of three stages, pinnacled and embattled and containing 4 bells: the south, porch has a carved stone roof which appears to have been brought from the old abbey; the church was thoroughly restored in 1891-2 under the direction of Mr. W. J. Fletcher F. R. J.B.A. of Wimborne when the west gallery was taken down and the tower arch opened out, the nave new roofed, the whole of the floors relaid, a new vestry with beating chamber underneath erected in the north side of the tower, the organ enlarged and the church reseated at a total cost of £1,763: the chancel was completely restored at the same time by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners at a cost of £400: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £261, net yearly value £218, with residence and 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held since 1874 by the Rev. John Marsh B.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge; the great tithes, £167, are held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Many objects of interest to the antiquary have been found in, this parish; Roman and British coins, urns, spear and axe heads, fibulae and a variety of fossils. On Bulbarrow hill is a circular double entrenchment, supposed to be of Celtic formation. There are several springs possessing calcareous and ferruginous properties. Thera are numerous barrows. The principal landowners are Henry Charles Thomas Hambro esq. of The Abbey, Milton, who is lord of the manor, Colonel R. H, Bingham, of Melcombe Bingham, and Colonel C. T. Hall, of Osmington lodge. The soil is chalk, sand and clay; subsoil, mainly chalk. The land is chiefly used for dairy purposes, with some corn. The area is 2,953 acres; rateable value, £3,681; the population in 1891 was 567.
