Historical Description

KINGTON MAGNA is a parish and village, 4 miles south-west from Gillingham station on the London and South Western railway, 6 south-east from Wincanton, and 7 west from Shaftesbury, in the Northern division of the county, Redlane hundred, Shaftesbury petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Shaftesbury portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The river Cale flows through the southern portion of the parish. The church of All Saints, built of stone, is cruciform, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and square embattled western tower with 4 bells and clock; the bells were re-hung and quarter turned in 1890; the two transepts have originally been side chapels; the chancel arch is Norman, and possibly a remnant of the original building; there is a very good organ; the east window was presented by a former rector, the Rev. W. L. Smith; there are five stained windows; the church was restored in 1862 by the Rev. William Dugdale, and the west window, inserted by Miss Dugdale, is in memory of her father; the seats are all free, and will hold 400 people. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge, £408, gross yearly value, £530; net, £450, with 68 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. Canon John Smith, of Shaftesbury, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Thomas Hyne Edwards M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The rectorial glebe is partly let in allotments for the benefit of the poor of the parish. Here is a chapel for Primitive Methodists. Brick making is carried on here. J. K. D. Wingfield-Digby esq. M.P. is the principal landowner. The soil is loam and clay, subsoil, clay and stone. The land is principally in pasture. The area is 1,891 acres; rateable value, £3,801; the population in 1891 was 427.

National School (mixed), with residence for mistress; built in 1854, for 100 children; average attendance, 58.
