Historical Description

LODERS (or Lothers), Upper and Lower, is a parish on the Asker river, 2 miles east-north-east from Bridport terminal station on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, Bridport union, county court district and petty sessional division, hundred of Lothers, rural deanery of Bridport (Bridport portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an ancient stone edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and square embattled western tower with 6 bells: the font has a square Norman bowl of Purbeck marble: there are 450 sittings: in the churchyard is a quaint epitaph to one Cox, a blacksmith, who died in 1823. The register dates from the year 1636. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £247, gross yearly value £315, net £190, with residence and 1 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord. Chancellor and devisees of the late Sir Molyneux Hyde Nepean bart. alternately, and held since 1887 by the Rev. David Thomas M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. At Upper Loders, 1 mile east, is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, built in 1872 and restored in 1888. Here was once a Benedictine priory, founded by R. de Redvers, temp. Henry I. as a cell to Mountburgh; the revenues at the Dissolution were estimated at £80.

The devisiees of the late Sir Molyneux Hyde Nepean bart. are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, rocky. The chief crops are wheat, barley and some land in pasture. The area is 2,241 acres; rateable value, £4,585; the population in 1891 was 672 in the civil and 880 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Pymore and Dottery are hamlets, 2 miles west, with a chapel in connection with the mother church at Loders. By the “Divided Parishes Act,” this portion of the parish of Loders was in 1884 transferred for civil purposes to the parish of Allington.

National School (mixed), built in 1869, by Isabel Lady Nepean, for 200 children; average attendance, 130.
