Historical Description

LONGFLEET, a tithing, is now an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1833 out of Great Canford, immediately adjoining and forming part of the borough and county of the town of Poole, the buildings in the parish of St. Paul, Poole, being continuous with those in this parish, in the Eastern division of the county, Cogdean hundred, Poole petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitchurch (Poole portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary is a stone structure, erected in 1833, in the Early English style; it has chancel, nave, south porch and western tower, with spire, together 108 feet in height, bell-cot containing one bell: in 1893 the chancel was lengthened and vestries added and a clock placed in the tower as a memorial to the late Rev. J. L. Williams, vicar here for 23 years, who died in 1893: there are nine stained windows ; the centra light of the east window is a memorial to the late Mrs. Henry Burden and there are other memorial windows: the reredos erected in 1895, was the gift of Mrs. Williams: an acre of land, presented by Lord Wimborne, was added to the churchyard in 1886: there are 750 sittings. The register dates from the year 1833. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £34, gross yearly value £189, net £179, with residence and an acre of land in the adjoining parish of Parkstone, in the gift of Lord Wimborne, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Okes Parish M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel. Garland’s charity of about £13 yearly, founded in 1833, is for coal to be given to the poor at Christmas; there is also the interest of £400, left by Mr. G. Rogers, and £100 by Miss Sarah Adey. Lord Wimborne is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The area is 1,289 acres; rateable value, £11,487; the population in 1891 was 2,750, including 97 officers and inmates of the Poole workhouse.

National School (mixed), with master’s residence attached, was erected in 1839, enlarged in 1874, & further enlarged in 1883 & in 1886 & in 1893 for 290 children; average attendance, 94 boys, 93 girls & 55 infants.
