Historical Description

LYDLINCH is a parish and village, agreeably situated on the river Lyd or Lyddon, a feeder of the Stour, 3 miles west from Sturminster Newton station, on the Midland and South Western Junction railway, 11 west from Blandford, 11 south-west from Shaftesbury and 9 south-east from Sherborne, in the Northern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division and union of Sturminster Newton, Shaftesbury county court district, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Stalbridge portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. Under the operation of the Divided Parishes Act, the parish of Stock Gaylard has been added to this parish for civil purposes only. The church of St. Thomas a Becket is a small stone structure, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, north aisle, south porch and square embattled western tower, with pinnacles, which contains a peal of 5 bells and a clock: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent charge £379, gross yearly value £461, with 60 acres of glebe land and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Yeatman, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Francis George Henley M. A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Attached to the church ere charities of the annual value of £92, derived from land left in 1811 and called the Romaine and Bissall charity, for apprenticing poor children, distribution among the poor and for repairs of the church. The brick and tile works of Mrs. Robert English are here. Mrs. Yeatman is lady of the, manor and the chief landowner. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,446 acres; rateable value, £4,874, which includes that of Stock Gaylard; the population in 1891 was 382 in the civil and 326 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Stroud is 1 mile north-west; Hyde, 1 mile south-west; Blackrow, 1 mile south-west; & King Stag, which partly in this parish, 3 miles south-west.
