Historical Description
Marnhull, the paternal estate of the Hussey family. This is a very large parish, situated on the south bank of the Stour, about five miles southwest from Shaftesbury. The land of this lordship, in Mr. Hutchin's time, was estimated to be worth 4,000l. per annum. It is all enclosed: the soil is very good, chiefly clay; but near the church stony. Leland gives this account of it : "Marnelle, on the left ryte of Stour, is a good uplandish towne, and the lordship belonged to Glessonbyri." Journey from Shaftesbury to Poole, through Blandford and Wimborne Minster.
MARNHULL is a parish and large scattered village on the navigable river Stour, 3 miles east from Stalbridge and 3 north from Sturminster Newton stations on the Midland and South-Western Junction railway and 7 west from Shaftesbury, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Sturminster Newton, county court district of Shaftesbury, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Shaftesbury portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Gregory is a building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style ; it has chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, with a handsome square embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 5 bells and clock: the nave roof is a very fine specimen of the Tudor type: in 1882 the chancel was rebuilt at the expense of the rector: in 1887 two of the bells were recast and the whole rehung at the same time and a clock was placed in the tower: there is a memorial window, erected by the Misses Senior, to their parents; the stained east window, and another in the chancel, were erected by the late Rev. R. B. Kennard, rector 1858-95 to his first wife, who died 1 Jan. 1878, and there is another given by Mr. John Hunt as a memorial to his wife who died 13 Feb. 1894; there are 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory; tithes commuted for £1,030, average £779, net yearly value £535, with 26 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan, Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. There is a Catholic church dedicated, to St. Mary, which took the place in 1832 of the chapel which had been removed from Stour Provost to Nash Court in 1725: this church in 1884 was transferred by Dr. Vaughan, Bishop of Plymouth, to the Austin Canons, who have added a chancel and built the adjoining Priory and College of St. Joseph in 1886; it was again transferred in August, 1891 to the Oblates of the Sacred Heart: the present prior is the Rev. Louis Feron and Rev. A. Constant Dodard parish priest. Here are two breweries, two meltings, a corn mill and several stone quarries; also a steam butter factory owned by Mr. Richard March. There are coal and clothing clubs and a needlework guild. Nash Court, the residence of Capt. Edwin Greenwood Hardy, 1 mile north, is the property of the trustees of the late Rev. R. Bruce Kennard M.A. lords of the manor; it was formerly the property of John Hussey esq. and had been in the possession of his family since the, time of Charles II. and is a fine mansion in the Elizabethan style. Lord Stalbridge and Frederick axe the chief landowners. The soil is clay, sand and rock ; the subsoil is limestone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and peas.
