Historical Description

MARSHWOOD is a large and scattered parish, 5 miles south-west from Chard Junction station on the London and South-Western railway and 4 ½ north-west from Bridport terminal station on a branch of the Great Western railway, 9 north-east from Lyme Regis and 6 south-west from Beaminster, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Whitchurch, union of Beaminster, petty sessional division and county court district of Brid'port, rural deanery of Bridport (Lyme portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary is a plain stone building, in the Gothic style, erected in 1841 and rebuilt in 1884, consisting of nave of four bays, south aisle, and embattled north-western tower containing 1 bell, and will seat 180. The register dates from the year 1841. The living is a parochial chapelry, annexed with Stanton St. Gabriel to the vicarage of Whitchurch Canonicorum, average tithe rent-charge £584, joint gross yearly value £650, net £274, with glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Druitt M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, who resides at Whitchurch Canonicorum. There is a Congregational chapel.

Bullen’s charity, of £500 left in 1852, the interest, £15 yearly, to be expended in clothing and blankets for the poor, at the discretion of the incumbent and the churchwardens. John Bullen Tatchell Tatchell-Bullen esq. J.P. is the chief landowner and lord of the manor, and holds a court leet and court baron, and resides at Marshwood Manor House. The soil is clayey; subsoil, strong clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 3,530 acres; rateable value, £4,265; the population in 1891 was 348.

In 1884, by Local Government Board Order, Yard and Gerrard’s farms were transferred to this parish from Whitchurch Canonicorum.

National School (mixed), with residence for mistress, built in 1842, for 90 children, average attendance, 50.
