Historical Description

PYDEL-TRENTHIDE is a parish and very pleasant village situated in a valley and plentifully supplied with water, having some excellent springs in its neighbourhood, which feed the Piddle or Trent river, and extending nearly 2 miles on the Dorchester road, 8 miles north from Dorchester stations on the London and South-Western and Great Western railways, 3 east from Cerne and 16 south-west from Blandford, in the Western division of the county, liberty of Pydel-Trenthide, petty sessional division and union of Cerne, county court district of Dorchester, rural deanery of Whitchurch (Bare Regis portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of All Saints, situate at the extreme north end of the parish, is an ancient edifice of stone, probably dating from the 13th century, and consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, south porch, and a lofty embattled western tower with pinnacles and 5 bells: there are several stained windows in memory of the Bridge and Barkworth families; within the communion rails is a beautifully carved stone monument to John Bridge esq. of the city of London, who died in the year 1834: the church was beautifully restored in 1853, and has 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £79, gross yearly value £194, net £93, with 109 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Winchesters and held since 1894 by the Rev. Roger William Hammond Dalison M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. In 1892 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners granted the sum of £1,000 towards the cost of improving and enlarging the vicarage. Here is a chapel for Wesleyans (built in 1894), and one for Baptists (built in 1876) at Lackington, which is the southern part of the parish. Here are several barrows. This parish is called sometimes Piddletrenthide, sometimes Puddletrenthide, and less frequently Pydel-Trenthide; on the west face of the tower is an inscription in old English characters, dated 1487; “Est. Pydel Trenth villa, in Dorsedie comitatu. Nascitur in illa quam. rexit. vicariatu.” The Manor House, the property of Winchester College, is in the village, and is surrounded by fine pleasure grounds and gardens; it is occupied by Mrs. Bridge. The neighbouring hills command some very extensive views, the English Channel, Isle of Wight and Corfe Castle being distinctly seen from them on a fine day. The principal landowners are Edmund Barkworth esq. and Winchester College, who are lords of the manor. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 4,487 acres; rateable value, £3,541; the population in 1891 was 673.

National School (mixed), built by the Bridge family & presented to the parish by the late J. E. Bridge esq. J.P. : it has been considerably enlarged under the provisions of the Elementary Education Act, for 220 children; average attendance, 96; the interest of Harding’s charity, amounting to £8 10s. yearly, is appropriated towards the annual expenses & is assisted by a government grant.
