Historical Description

In the parish of Pimperne, in a field not far from Blandford, there was formerly a remarkable piece of antiquity called Pimperne Maze; a sort of labyrinth formed bv ridges of earth about a foot high, extending nearly over an acre of ground. It is supposed by Dr. Stukeley to have been a Roman work, and of that class of antiquities called by him Julian Boxvers. About the year 1730 the whole was ploughed up.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PIMPERNE is a parish on the road from Blandford to Salisbury, miles north-east from Blandford station on the Midland and South Western Junction railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of the same name, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Blandford, rural deanery of Pimperne (Blandford portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Peter is a handsome edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, southeast porch and square embattled western tower, with pinnacles and containing 5 bells, one of which was recast and two added in 1891, and was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1874, at the expense of the late Viscount Portman: the porch has a fine Norman arch, and over the porch is a statue of St. Peter, holding a bunch of keys: the stained east window was presented in 1868, by Alice and Elizabeth Wright, and on the south side is one to John and Emily M. Matthews, erected by their children in August 1874: the brass lectern was given by Robert Hewett esq. of Reading, in 1893, in memory of his wife, who died 18 May, 1891: there are 210 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £432, net £400, with residence, in the gift of Viscount Portman, and held since 1886 by the Rev. James Hussey M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford.

The Wesleyans have a place of worship, and there is a reading room. In the centre of the village are the remains of an old cross. Here are many barrows. Pimperne training stables are the property of Viscount Portman, Mr. William Walters being occupier and trainer. The principal landowner is Viscount Portman, who is lord of the manor. The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,914a. 2r. 33p.; rateable value, £3,065; the population in 1891 was 420 in the civil and 391 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order, the hamlet of Nutford, with a population of 29, was in 1886 transferred to this parish from Blandford Forum.

Under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” a portion of Blandford has been transferred to this parish.

National School (mixed), built in 1864, with house for master, for 120 children; average attendance, 55; a new school is now (1895) contemplated.
