The church of St. Mary has been well restored at a cost of about £2,200: it is a building of stone, the original part is Early Norman, consisting of a chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing 5 bells and a chiming clock, and also a handsome south doorway: the chancel contains six good stained windows : the original chancel arch is still preserved and is a highly interesting example of the Early Norman period; its capitals are enriched with characteristic sculpture and its pillars with a variety of arabesque patterns: there is a beautiful south porch of recent erection, but the inner doorway formed part of the ancient edifice; this doorway is surrounded by a large and elaborate arrangement of niches flanked by panelled and crocketed buttresses and pinnacles; the principal panel contains a figure of the Virgin and Child: in the under walls of the tower are some remains of sculptured stones which belong to the Early Norman period: there are 5 bells, 3 and 5 were cast by Thomas Bilbie in 1772; the tenor bell weighs 27 cwt. : the interior of the edifice is furnished with modern fittings, among which is a fine brass eagle lectern and a handsome panelled pulpit enriched with sculptured effigies of St. Peter, St. John and the Virgin: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a vicarage, with West Milton annexed, average tithe rent-charge £171, joint gross yearly value £303, net £237, with 85 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury, and held since 1889 by the Rev.
