Historical Description
In the small village of Pokeswell, there is a Druidical Circle, consisting of fifteen stones; one or two seem missing on the northwest, where, perhaps, was an entrance Some of them are quite level with, and some but little above, the surface of the ground. Two of them, on the southwest, are about two feet high, and broad; some are scarcely one foot high. They are all extremely old, rough, and irregular, and full of holes worn by the weather. They stand on a tump, round which are the remains of a small ditch. The circle is four yards and a half in diameter. Eight or nine paces from it are three or four erect stones, which seem the remains of another circle; and about 200 yards distant, at the northeast and east, are four pretty large stones, which perhaps formed another large circle, or, possibly, an avenue to the former.
POKESWELL is a parish, 4 ½ miles east from Broadway station on the Weymouth and Abbotsbury branch of the Great Western railway, 6 north-east from Weymouth and 6 south-east from Dorchester, in the Southern division of the county, Winfrith hundred, petty sessional division of Dorchester, Weymouth union and county court district, rural deanery of Dorchester (Weymouth portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The old church was pulled down and the present one erected in 1868, the entire cost being defrayed by John Trenchard Trenchard esq.; the new church of St. John the Evangelist is a building of dressed stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, short transepts, north porch and round western tower, surmounted by a spire, containing one bell: the interior of the base of the tower forms the baptistery: the windows are lancet-shaped, except the east window, which is Decorated and stained, representing the Ascension; the west window has a figure of St. John: the chancel is paved with encaustic tiles, and the ceilings of nave and chancel are elaborately carved: there are 270 sittings.
The register dates from the year 1675. The living is a rectory annexed to that of Warmwell, average tithe rent-charge (Pokeswell) £119, joint gross yearly value £303, net £200, with 30 ½ acres of glebe at Pokeswell, in the gift of Col. Jocelyn Pickard-Cambridge, but for the next turn only the Rev. J. Wood, and held since 1849 by the Rev. Edward Pickard-Cambridge M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, who resides at Warmwell. On the downs is a circle of large stones, supposed to have been a Druidical temple. Col. Jocelyn Pickard-Cambridge is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is variable, clayey, but not heavy, and the arable, medium with some light. The chief crops are barley, oats, wheat and some land in pasture. The area is 834 acres; rateable value, £526; the population in 1891 was 82.
