Historical Description
Spetisbury, a large straggling village three miles from Blandford, pleasantly situated on the banks of the Stour. In this parish "is a very perfect encampment, called Spetisbury Ring, which has been considered by some as Roman, and by others as Saxon. Its proximity to the Icenning Street (which runs about a mile distant) seems at first to countenance the former supposition; but the same circumstance induces me to think that it was constructed after the Roman times. If it had been a Roman station, the road would certainly have been made to communicate with it, either directly or by means of a vicinal branch, no traces of which are to be perceived. Besides, the rampart is nearly circular, and several Saxon coins have been found within its area. The entrance is from the northwest.
SPETISBURY is a parish and pleasant village, on the river Stour, over which there is a bridge of 9 arches connecting this place with Tarrant Crawford, with a station on the London and South Western and Midland (Somerset and Dorset) joint line of railway, 3 miles south-east-by-south from Blandford, 11 northwest from Poole and 120 by rail from London, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Loosebarrow, Blandford petty sessional division, union and county court district, Whitchurch rural deanery (Milton portion), Dorset archdeaconry and Salisbury diocese. The church of St. John the Baptist is of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and embattled western tower containing 5 bells, and was rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) in 1859: there is a monument in the north aisle to John Bowyer, d. 1599, and an old hour glass dating 1700: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1705, but is very incomplete. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Charlton Marshall annexed, average tithe rent-charge £342, joint gross yearly value £642, net £300, including 177 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of W. E. Sawbridge Erle-Drax esq. and held since 1886 by the Rev. Samuel Arthur Walker M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are Primitive Methodist and Congregational chapels, the former erected in 1842 and enlarged in 1862. A parish room, erected in 1891, near the rectory, at a cost of £160, is a corrugated iron building used for parish purposes, and during the winter months as a reading and recreation room, to which is attached a library of 100 volumes. There is here a Catholic Priory of Canons regular: the house, formerly called the Mansion House, in 1800 passed from F. Fane to Mrs. Tunstall, who bought it for £3,150 for the English Augustinian Canonesses, who a few years before had returned from Louvain: they remained here until 1861, when they removed to their present priory, near Newton Abbot, Devon; the house was then occupied by the nuns of the ancient order of Brigittines: in 1887, the nuns having taken another house, the present owners, the Canons Regular, bought it for their ecclesiastical students: this order was well known in England before the Reformation, and its priests went by the name of Black Canons, and had houses in every county of England: a few years ago some members of this order landed in England, and have taken up again the work of their predecessors: there is a good church, erected in 1830, attached to the priory, open to the public, where ceremonies are carried out in all the splendour of the Catholic ritual: in the lady chapel is an ancient rood screen of four panels, on which are painted figures representing “Our Lady, Jesus Christ, a saint, and a Bishop,” it was discovered a few years ago at Whitford, near Axminster. Here is a hall let for public meetings. In the neighbourhood are the remains of a fortification, in which many coins and other relics of the Saxons have been found: it is called Spetisbury Ring, or Crawford Castle. The principal landowners are W. E. Sawbridge-Erle-Drax esq. of Holnest Park, who is lord of the manor, and Thomas Mackrell esq. The soil is a light and chalky loam ; subsoil, chalk and gravel. Crops, wheat and barley. The area is 2,136 acres; rateable value, £2,938; the population in 1891 was 562.
Endowed School. In 1728 Dr. Sloper founded & endowed a school for the poor children of Spetisbury & Charlton Marshall, which was further endowed by Dr. Hall, Bishop of Bristol: this school was formerly held in a barn, but in 1862 a brick building, with house for master, was erected for 150 children; average attendance, 120.
