April 10, 1447, and three memorial windows to the Rev. Charles Egerton and Mary his wife, and John their sou; and the stained east window, placed in 1893, is a memorial to Col. Bragge, Margaret, his wife and Adela, their daughter; there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £379, gross yearly value £453, net £360, with 46 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Capt. John Arthur Bragge, of Sadborow, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Charles Albert Bragge M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Lyme portion. The vicarage house is of ancient date, and when alterations were being made some years ago, a mediaeval stone chimneypiece was found embedded in the wall, and is now placed in the study. Here is a meeting house for the Plymouth Brethren, built 1881. Petty sessions are held here at the school house every two months on a Saturday, at which the magistrates for the Bridport division sit. The Village Hall, erected in 1889 by Miss Sarah B. Evans of Forde Abbey, in commemoration of the Queen’s Jubilee, will hold 120 people. Forde Abbey, on the banks of the Axe, unlike the neighbouring abbey of Newenham, was preserved from total destruction, and exhibits at this day the remains of a splendid building converted into a princely residence; the abbey was founded May 3, 1135, by Adelicia, daughter of Baldwin de Brioniis by Albreda, the niece of William the Conqueror; it was also of the Cistercian order, and one of the “greater Abbeys,” being valued at the Dissolution, according to Dugdale, at £374 10s. 6d. and according to Speed, at £381 10s. 6d. yearly; the bones of the founder, and many of the early members of the Courtenay family, some of whom were munificent benefactors to the abbey, lie buried in the vaults of the church, which was dedicated in 1239, and measured 295 by 60 feet; the church, of which there are now no remains, consisted of choir, transepts, with aisles and nave with aisles; the abbey and some lands near it were given by Henry VIII. at the Dissolution to Richard Pollard esq. and after passing into several hands came, in 1649, to Edmund Prideaux esq. who was Attorney-General under the Protectorate, and who was probably the means of preserving the building at that period; the cloisters, on the north side of the church are in part extant, and include, in the east alley the chapter house (1165-90), with an east window of the 15th century, and north of it the vaulted common house of twelve bays (1190-1200) below the dormitory, the latter being now divided into various apartments; the north alley retains its vaulting, and here was the old refectory; on the west side was the hospitium; the portion of the cloisters now perfect has windows divided by buttresses and filled with Perpendicular tracery; the parapet is enriched with quatrefoils and a series of 42 heraldic shields; the vaulting is of plaster work and the whole was erected by Thomas Chard, the last abbot; extending westward is the new refectory, 55 by 28 feet, built by the same abbot; it has a carved panelled ceiling, decorated in gold and colour and is lighted by tall mullioned square-headed windows; the eastern half is now divided into three stories, occupied by various apartments; the west wing was designed by Inigo Jones, and adjoining his porch is a Perpendicular tower of three stories, with splendid oriels on the two upper floors and an embattled parapet; the monastic kitchen is still in use; the abbey was surrendered March 8, 1539, by Thomas Chard, abbot, titular bishop of Solburia and coadjutor of Exeter the 14th century gateway and conventual barn remain; some parts of the interior of the abbey are ornamented with splendid and valuable old Flemish tapestry, including five of Raphael’s famous cartoons; the existing buildings, with modern additions form the seat of Wm. Herbert Evans esq. D.L., J.P. and contain some noble apartments. Holditch Court, formerly the residence of the Brook family, is now a ruin, and the chapel has been desecrated and is used as a barn; the castle keep and the ivy-clad tower still remain. Sadborow, the seat of Capt. John Arthur Bragge J.P. is an extensive modern mansion and commands a fine view of the surrounding country. Capt. Bragge is lord of the manor, and holds a court leet every year, on the second Friday in October, at the “Golden Lion.” The principal landowners are Capt. Bragge and Wm. Herbert Evans esq. The soil is chiefly light clay and stone brash; subsoil, flint. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and apples. The area is 5,331 acres ; rateable value, £7,963; the population in 1891 was 941, including the tithing of Beerhall.
