WAMBROOK is a parish, at the extreme west of the county, between the counties of Devon and Somerset, and on the Wam brook, 2 miles south-west from Chard station on the London and South Western and Great Western railways, 5 ½ miles north-west from Axminster, and 12 from Lyme Regis, in the Western division of the county, hundreds of Beaminster Forum and Redbome, Bridport petty sessional division, Chard union and county court district, rural deanery of Bridport (Lyme portion), archdeaconry of Dorset, and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary is a small plain edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and Early English north and south porches, with embattled western tower, with one pinnacle, and containing a peal of 5 bells; there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £195, gross yearly value £200, net £155, with 29 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Admiral John William Dorville, of Great Malvern, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Alfred Charles Clifford Spalding, of Jesus College, Cambridge. The principal landowners and lords of the manor are the trustees of the late Richard Thornton West esq. Stretham Hall, Exeter. The soil is stone brash and clay; subsoil, flint and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,857 acres; rateable value, £1,928; the population in 1891 was 231.

This parish was as from Mar. 31, 1896, transferred from Dorset to Somerset, under the provisions of Section 54 of the “Local Government Act, 1888” (51 and 52 Vict, c. 41), by Local Governments Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 12) Act” (58 and 59 Vict. c. 91), Order made May 27, 1895, numbered P, 1,164.
