Historical Description
Near Winterborne Abbas, four miles before we reach Dorchester, there is a small circle, formed by nine erect stones, and round about upon the Downs several other erect stones, and a great number of barrows of various descriptions. Dr. Stukeley observes "the adjacent Downs are much fuller of Celtic barrows than Salisbury plain, and hereabouts is an endless fund of Celtic and Roman inquiries." Dorchester Is supposed to have received its name from the Saxons, by whom it was called Dorncaster, from the British Dur or Dwyr, which signifies water, and the Saxon Chester, a corruption from the Roman Castrum, a camp or town; from which it is very evident the Latin name Dorcestria, in ancient records, and the modern name Dorchester, is derived. In the Itineraries of Antoninus and Richard of Cirencester, Dorchester appears as a Roman station : and indeed the ancient walls, the Via Iceniana, on which it stands, the several vicinal roads that issue hence, coins and other pieces of antiquity found here, prove it to have been a place of consideration with the Romans in this county.
In the Saxon age it made a considerable figure. King Athelstan ordained here two mints; a privilege that prince granted only to cities and walled towns. In the time of Edward the Confessor there were 172 houses in Dorsetshire. Since the Saxon period few remarkable circumstances have occurred in the history of the town.
In the reign of Queen Elizabeth several Popish Priests were executed here, and in 1685 it was the theatre of the cruelties of the infamous Judge Jefferies. In the year 1595 the town was afflicted by a dreadful plague, which was so destructive that there were scarcely sufficient of the living left to bury the dead. In 1613 a terrible fire consumed nearly the whole of the place, with the two churches of the Holy Trinity and All Saints. The damage was estimated at 200,0001.
WINTERBORNE ABBAS is a parish, 3 miles south-by-west from Grimston station on the Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway and 5 west from Dorchester, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Eggerton, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Dorchester, rural deanery of Bridport (Abbotsbury portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The village is pleasantly situated in a vale, on the high road from Dorchester to Bridport: the surrounding hills are covered with barrows, and here was supposed to have been a great encampment of the Romans. The South Winterbourne stream rises about a mile west of the village, near the remains of an ancient British circle, consisting of several rough stones thrown into circular form, called the Nine Stones. The church of St. Mary is a small stone building, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel nave, north porch and an embattled western tower with turret, containing 3 bells, on one of which is an impression, stamped from the die of a coin of the Plantagenet period with the date 1401: there is a Early English tower arch; there are about 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1791. The living is a rectory, with that of Winterborne Steepleton annexed, average tithe rent-charge £317, joint gross yearly value £437, net £364, including 88 acres of glebe in Winterborne Abbas and 114 in Winterborne Steepleton, in the gift of Lincoln College, Oxford, and held since 1889 by Rev. William Floyer Cornish M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, who resides at Winterborne Steepleton. Here is a chapel for Baptists. Col. Robert Williams M.P. Bridehead, Littlebredy, who is lord of the manor and R. Henville Simonds esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light gravel; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are corn and some land in pasture. The area is 1,500 acres; rateable value, £1,025 ; the population in 1891 was 1207.

This parish is in a sequestered spot, 2 miles south-east from Dorchester stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Culliford Tree, liberty of Frampton, Dorchester union and county court district, petty sessional divisions of Bridport and Dorchester, rural deanery of Dorchester (Dorchester portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Peter is a small stone structure in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave and north porch with square embattled western tower containing 2 bells: there is a carved oak screen and there are two full-sized effigies in a recumbent position: there are also stained windows in memory of Sir Arthur Charles Magenis, Countess Fortescue, the Hon. Mrs. Damer, Colonel Damer and Mrs. Wilmot Williams; there are 100 sittings: in the churchyard is the Damer family vault, and a tomb erected to the memory of the Rev. William Barnes B.D. (the Dorsetshire poet), rector here 1862-86. The register dates from the year 1696. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £235, net yearly value £182, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Portarlington, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Herbert John Underhill Charlton M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, who is also incumbent of Whitcombe. The charities amount to £19 yearly, derived from the rent of land in the parish of Loders, left by Sir Robert Mellor and Dame Margaret his wife 1620, and money in the funds, the bequest of John Tuck, a former tenant of Came farm. Came House is a large handsome mansion of Portland stone in the Corinthian style, built in 1755, and is the property and residence of the Earl of Portarlington, who is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is gravel; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat and oats and a large portion of pasture. Here are many barrows.
