The church of St. Nicholas, rebuilt in 1840 by Mrs. Michel, is an edifice of flint and Portland stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, western porch and square western tower surmounted by a spire, containing one bell: in the chancel is a handsome stained window: there is a brass to Capt. H. Mansel-Pleydell, erected by his brother officers, and at the entrance to the churchyard is a fine marble carved Iona cross as a memorial of the same officer by his parents: there are 150 sittings: in the churchyard is a beautiful marble cross to the memory of John Roper esq. The register dates from the year 1750. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value from tithe rent-charge £199, average £151, net income £145, with 1 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of John Clavell Mansel-Pleydell esq. and held since 1845 by the Rev. Henry Wills Guy B.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The old rectory house, which had become very dilapidated, was entirely consumed by fire on the 13th September, 1888, and a new one erected in 1889. Formerly there were three churches in this parish, and the population was much larger than it is at present. The old manor house, formerly belonging to the Moreton family, is now the residence of Major-Gen. Edward Musgrave Beadon. The principal landowners are J. C. Mansel-Pleydell esq. of Whatcombe House, Winterborne Whitchurch, who is lord of the manor, and Henry Charles Thomas Hambro esq. of Milton Abbey. The soil is light; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,312 acres; rateable value, £811; the population in 1891 was 103.
