Historical Description

Aycliffe, a village of considerable antiquity, formerly belonging to the sec of Lindisfarne, but afterwards assigned by Bishop Aldune, to the earls of Northumberland ; a synod was held here, according to the Saxon Chronicle, in the year 782, and another in the year 789. The Church, which is dedicated, to St. Acca, occupies an elevated site, at some distance from the village, southward. This parish, according to the late returns, contained 297 houses, and 1379 inhabitants, and is situated 240 miles from London. The marks of the Conqueror’s devastation are evident within a mile from this village ; for when the grass is cut the foundation of a town appears completely visible.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

AYCLIFFE is a township, village and parish, containing the townships of Great Aycliffe, Braffeeton, Woodham and Preston-le-Skerne, and is 246 miles from London, 5 north from Darlington and 6 from Bishop Auckland, with a station on the main line of the North Eastern railway and 1 mile east from Heighington station in this parish, on the Stockton and Darlington branch line, in the South Eastern division of the county, South Eastern division of Darlington ward, in Darlington union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient edifice of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the circular columns of the nave arcades support semi-circular arches on the north side, those of the south being pointed: the pulpit and pews date from 1600, and the latter have balustraded backs: the font is of early date, and in the north wall of the nave are sedilia: the stained east window is a memorial to Balfour Atkinson, d. 1866, and the west window to the Rev. John Davie Eade, 45 years rector of this parish and canon of Durham: two other windows are also stained: in the nave is the figure of a cross-legged knight: the church was restored in 1881-2 at a cost of £3,000, and has 340 sittings: in the churchyard are remarkable remains of two Saxon crosses, each covered with delicate tracery; one of them has on different sides representations of the Crucifixion, the crucifixion of St. Peter and five figures, two in one row and three in a row below. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £337, net yearly value £314, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Charles John Aylmer Eade M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, the former erected in 1829 and the latter in 1887. There are charities belonging to this parish to the amount of £8 yearly. The Dean and Chapter of Durham, who are lords of the manor, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, John Robert Ord esq. of Haughton Hall, and Messrs. George Chapman, Jacob Coulson and James Hutchinson, of Aycliffe, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly a strong loam; subsoil, limestone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, peas and clover. The acreage is 1,930; rateable value, £7,558. The population in 1881 was 839.

National School (mixed), erected in 1745 & enlarged in 1814-38 & 84, for about 200 children; average attendance, 130 .
