Historical Description

BENFIELDSIDE is a township and ecclesiastical district formed from Lanchester parish Sept. 3rd, 1847, in the rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham: it comprises two small towns, namely, Blackhill and Shotley Bridge, for which see Shotley Bridge. The inhabitants attend the church of St. Cuthbert at Shotley Bridge. The principal landowners are Messrs. John Annandale and Sons, Consett Iron Co. Richard Murray esq. and John Booth esq. The soil is light; subsoil, rocky. The area of the township is 1,834 acres; rateable value, £15,954 (this is including Shotley Bridge and Blackhill); the population in 1881 was 5,700.
