Historical Description

BILLINGHAM is a village, township and parish, situated on the road from Stockton to Sunderland, with junction station 1 ½ miles north-west of the Port Clarence branch of the North Eastern railway, 2 ½ miles north-east from Stockton-on-Tees, 10 south-west from Hartlepool, 7 north from Yarm and 242 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, north-east division of Stockton ward, Stockton county court district and petty sessional division, Stockton union, rural deanery of Hartlepool, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Cuthbert is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Anglo-Norman or Transition and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, 144 feet in height, containing a clock and 3 bells: in the chancel are two stained memorial windows to Miss Burrell: there is a curious circular Early English font, with a lofty and richly carved Elizabethan cover of oak, octagonal in three stages and finished with a kind of spire formed by rudely crocketed timbers, radiating from a centre and tapering upwards; there are also brasses to Robert Brerely, vicar and prebendary of Norton, ob. 1480 and others to the names of Lambton, 1583, and Neceham, 1436: at the south doorway is a slab with a Saxon inscription: the nave is Early English, circa 1260; the arcades have square piers, with shafts at the angles supporting square moulded caps, and the arches are enriched with tooth ornament: the chancel was rebuilt in 1847: the church was restored in 1865 and affords 240 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £183, net yearly value £330, including 112 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1853 by the Rev. Philip Rudd M.A, and formerly fellow of Durham University. The Rev. John Wallis, author of the natural history and antiquities of part of this county and of Northumberland, was curate here 1775-92. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There are charities of about £90 yearly value. Billingham is a very ancient place, and memorable for a great battle fought here in 795 in the reign of Eardulf, King of Northumbria, between his troops and the forces of Wada, a rebel in which the latter were routed. Egfrid, Bishop of Lindisfarne (828-46), gave Billingham, with other lands, to the church, and it is believed to be one of those places seized by AElla, King of Deira (A.D. 560), during the conflicts for the Northumbrian crown. During the episcopate of Bishop Cuthard (900-915), Reinwald, a Danish sea-king, made a descent on the eastern coast of Northumberland, and, taking possession of the territories and towns of St. Cuthbert, gave the country between Castle Eden and Billingham to Scula, one of his chieftains; William the Norman restored Billingham to the church, and gave it to the prior and monks of Durham. The Dean and Chapter of Durham and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and principal owners.

The land is very fertile, and produces good crops of wheat, oats, barley, turnips &;c. The area is 2,770 acres; rateable value, £4,632; and the population in 1881 was 480.

National School, built in 1852, for 126 children; average attendance, 51; & supported in part by the Dean & Chapter of Durham.
