Coopen History

Coopen, or Coopen Bewley, is a township, situated on the north-eastern side of the parish, 2 ½ miles from the village. The Dean and Chapter of Durham are lords of the manor, to whom the land belongs, except Saltholme, one of the largest farms in the county, which is situated in this township, and is the property of the University of Durham, the rent of which (with the manorial rights and rectorial tithes, amounting to £143 3s.) is applied towards the payment of the university fellowships. The area of Coopen Bewley with Saltholme is 2,639 acres; rateable value, £15,244; the population in 1881 was 997.
