Historical Description

BISHOP MIDDLEHAM is a parish in the Mid division of the county, north-eastern division of the ward of Stockton, and union of Sedgefield, county court district and petty sessional division of Durham, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham, and comprises the townships of Bishop Middleham, Mainsforth and Thrislington; the latter township was joined to the parish of Cornforth for ecclesiastical purposes, by Order in Council, in September, 1868: the village is about 8 miles south-east from Durham, and 2 from the Ferry Hill station on the main line of the North Eastern railway. The church of St.Michael stands upon a hill south of the village and is an ancient structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles and a western turret containing a bells: the interior was restored about 1845 by the late Mrs. Surtees, of Mainsforth Hall, the widow of Robert Surtees esq. F.S.A. the historian of Durham (d. 11 Feb. 1834), in memory of whom the stained east and west windows and a monument in the chancel have bean erected: there are 400 sittings. The site of the Bishop’s palace, of which there are 110 ruins now remaining visible, is on the south side of the church. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £127, net yearly value £300, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Charles Ashforth Cartledge M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is a colliery in the parish, at present closed. There are two local charities, Lady Freville’s varies from £25, and Miss Ambler’s of £12. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Colonel Surtees, Viscount Boyne and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The soil is light marl; subsoil, clay and rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and potatoes. The area is 2,023 acres; rateable value, £2,940; the population of the township in 1881 was 480.
