Historical Description

Castle Eden, containing 55 houses, and 281 inhabitants ; this village, with its neighbourhood, is the property of Rowland Burdon, Esq. whose residence is near the village. The mansion-house, which, with the Church, was erected by Mr. Burdon, is a large elegant edifice, built after an ancient model, and beautifully situated on the top of the woody precipice that forms the southern boundary of the romantic defile, called Castle Eden Dean, and commanding a fine land and sea prospect. Among other improvements lately made by Mr. Burdon in this neighbourhood, was the erection of a cotton manufactory, but which has since been removed to Durham, and a sail-cloth manufactory established in its place. There is a commodious inn established here, where post chaises are kept, and also a post-office for the delivery of letters. The extensive and romantic Dean running a distance of four miles to the sea, with the beautiful natural scenery in the neighbourhood, have attracted considerable notice from strangers, and Castle Eden, during the summer months, on the Sundays particularly, is thronged with the curious in natural phenomena, and the lovers of romantic scenery.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CASTLE EDEN (anciently “Yoden” or “Jodene”) is a township and parish, situated 2 ½ miles from the sea, and on the main road from Sunderland to Stockton, 10 miles east from Durham by road, 14 south from Sunderland, and 7 north-west from Hartlepool by railway; it is the head of a petty sessional division, in the South Eastern division of the county, southern division of Easington ward, union of Easington, county court district of Hartlepool, rural deanery of Easington and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The Sunderland and Hartlepool and Ferry Hill and Hartlepool sections of the North Eastern railway pass through, this township and hare a station; a branch line is now opened from Castle Eden to Stockton. The township is very scattered, there being several small collections of houses; the principal are Castle Eden, Factory, Foundry and Wellfield; Factory is about a mile west from the church, and was so called from an extensive linen factory once situated there. The church of St. James, erected in 1764 by Rowland Burdon esq. is a building of stone, in the Early English style, enlarged and otherwise improved at various periods, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower with spire: there are monuments to Rowland Burdon esq. several years M.P. for the county of Durham, and the designer and builder of Sunderland bridge crossing the Wear; to John Maclean esq. and to Rowland Burdon esq. son of the above, and his wife: there are 400 sittings. The register dates for baptisms from 1720; burials, 1728; marriages, 1813. The living is a rectory, yearly value £242, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. John Burdon M.A., J.P. and held since 1885 by the Rev. Frederick Godwin Johnson Robinson M.A. of University College, Oxford. The rectory house, given by R. Burdon esq. to the benefice, and situated three-quarters of a mile south-west from the church, is covered with ivy. The chief station for the county police for Easington ward is situated here, and contains justice room, dwelling for the superintendent and cells for prisoners. There is an annual horticultural and horse show. A cattle market is held once a fortnight. There is an extensive colliery situated partly within this parish, the property of the Castle Eden Coal Company, affording employment to a considerable number of persons; the principal part of the works and the habitations of the miners are in the adjoining parish of Monk Hesleden. Here are an extensive brewery and maltings, brick and tile works, small steam corn mill, small ropery, and a good inn at the railway station. In a field, half-way between Horden Hall and Eden Hall, are remains of buildings, supposed to have formed the Saxon village of Yoden; these are surrounded by a trench or fosse, and on the north side is a conical structure, protected by several semicircular ditches, and affording from its summit an extensive and beautiful view: the site was excavated in 1884, but the objects found, consisting of grinding and sharpening stones, pottery, a bronze buckle, and other articles, were only of mediaeval date. Outside the kitchen garden at Castle Eden, a leaden tobacco stopper of the 17th century was found in 1820. Castle Eden Castle, the seat of the Rev. John Burdon M.A., J.P. is a castellated mansion of stone in the Gothic style, pleasantly situated in a spacious and well-wooded park at the head of a deep ravine: the interior is elegant, and contains a fine collection of paintings: a conservatory was added on the west side of the castle by the late Rowland Burdon esq. in 1864. Castle Eden Dene is a picturesque ravine of varying width, 3 miles long, extending to the sea, and is much frequented during the summer; the more open portions are thickly overgrown with ash, birch and yew trees, interrupted here and there by projecting rocks, and at the upper end a stream, foaming through the cliffs, forms a clear pool, called “Gunner’s pool,” from a person of that name who was drowned here; great improvements have been made in the Dene by the present owner; a tubular bridge has been erected across Gunner’s pool, walks laid out, and several rustic bridges erected. The Rev. John Burdon M.A., J.P. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is sand and loamy; the subsoil is clay and magnesian limestone. The crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans, turnips and potatoes. The township contains 1,935 acres of land; the assessed area is 1,831 acres; rateable value, £8,329; the population in 1881 was 880.

Petty Sessions are held at the Court house every alternate sat. at 10.30 a.m. The following places are included in the division :-Townships: Castle Eden, Easington, Haswell, Hutton Henry, Kelloe, Monkhesledon, Nesbitt, Sheraton, Shotton, Thornley, Trimdon & Wingate.
