Historical Description

COLLIERLEY is an ecclesiastical parish, formed Jan. 17, 1843, from the parishes of Chester-le-Street and Lanchester, with part of the township of Kyo, and the village of Annfield Plain. The township and village of Collierley or Dipton is situated on the road from Shotley Bridge to Newcastle, 10 miles south-west from Newcastle, 3 miles from Lintz Green station on the Consett branch of the North Eastern railway, in the North Western division of the county, west division of Chester ward, Lanchester union and petty sessional division, Consett county court district, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, The church of St. Thomas, situated in the township of Kyo and built in the year 1840, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a western bell cot containing one bell: there are 358 sittings. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with house, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1882 by the Rev. John Gornall, of St. Bees. There are Wesleyan Free Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The principal collieries in the parish are South Pontop, South Tanfleld, South Derwent, Pontop and South Medomesley, and there are several coke ovens. The Dipton Gas Company have erected works here to supply this part of the parish with gas: the works are leased to Messrs. Healy, Turnbull and Cook, of Newcastle. The Marquess of Bute K.T. who is lord of the manor, and Messrs. Joicey are the chief landowners. The soil is light loam; the subsoil clay. The chief crops are oats and barley and some land in pasture.
