Dipton History

Dipton and Collierley Dikes now form part of Collierley, which is frequently spoken of as Dipton. The church of St. John the Evangelist, situated in the township of Dipton and erected in 1886, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch, and a central embattled tower containing one bell: there are 420 sittings. The register dates from the year 1886. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Richard Tuson L.Th. Durham.

A School Board of 5 members was formed for Collierley, October 29, 1875, W. W. Thompson, Lanchester, clerk to the board; D. Mole, Collierley, attendance officer.

Board School, Ox hill, built in 1877, for 312 children; average attendance, 311.

A School Board of 5 members was formed for Kyo, November 5, 1875; W. H. Ritson, Lanchester, clerk to the board; William Ward, Ivestone, attendance officer.
