Historical Description

CONISCLIFFE is a parish comprising the townships of High Coniscliffe and Low Coniscliffe and the hamlet of Carlbury; it is in the South Eastern division of the county, ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Darlington, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The village of High Coniscliffe is situated on the north bank of the river Tees, and on the brink of a long ridge of limestone rocks, 4 miles west-by-north from Darlington, and 1 south-east from Piercebridge station on the Barnard Castle and Darlington section of the North Eastern railway. The church of St. Edwin is a building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with small crocketed pinnacles and a lofty octagonal spire, and containing a clock and 3 bells: there are memorials in the church to the Bowes family of Thornton Hall, and in the chancel are some ancient stalls and desks, with finials at the ends: here was formerly a chantry dedicated to St. Mary, worth £5 8s. yearly, besides five other chantries, viz. :-Bitry’s, valued at £6 4s.; Our Ladie Masse, £49s. 2d.; St. Katherine’s, St. Helen’s and the Twelve Apostles, £6 11s.: there are 304 sittings. The register commences in 1590. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £156, gross yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1858 by the Rev. George Goodenough Lynn M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1826. Bowes’s charity, left by Robert Bowes in 1734, consists of land, the rent of which is given to necessitous persons of High and Low Coniscliffe. Philip John Henry Howard esq. J.P. of Corby Castle, Cumberland, is lord of the manor; the Duke of Cleveland, Wm. Taylor esq. of Selby Lodge, Consett, and Hy. Kitchin esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is of a varied description and produces prolific crops of wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and turnips. The pop. of the township in 1881 was 355.
