Historical Description
EASINGTON is an extensive parish, township and village, pleasantly situated on the old road between Stockton and Sunderland, 10 miles east from Durham, 10 south from Sunderland, 17 north from Stockton and about 280 from London; it gives name to a ward of the county, a poor-law union and is in the South Eastern division of the county, county court district of Seaham Harbour, Castle Eden petty sessional division, rural deanery of Easington and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English and Early Decorated styles, with remains of Norman date, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: the greater part of the tower is Norman, and the lower stage forms a porch, with an entrance on the south side: the whole of the nave and chancel walls are Early English, circ. 1270, but the aisles have been rebuilt during the Decorated period, when the existing windows were inserted in the chancel; these are of unusually elegant character, and the heads are filled with graceful flowing tracery: the east end of the chancel originally had five beautiful Early English lancets, and at the restoration in 1853 the Decorated east window was removed and these lancets reopened and filled with stained glass, as memorials to members of the Liddell and Lyon families: in the chancel are two effigies assigned to members of the Conyers family: the arches of the nave arcades rest on alternately round and octagonal piers, with boldly moulded caps: the interior is filled with oak benches, dating from about 1660, the ends of which are carved with conventional foliage and fruit, pendent by ribbons from the tops, which are finished with foliated poppy heads: some of the chancel windows are stained: the church was thoroughly repaired and restored in 1853, under the direction of the late Mr. Philip Hardwick: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572. The living is a rectory, yearly value £1,000, with residence, partly of the 13th century, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1872 by the Rev. William Gorst Harrison M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge; Bernard Gilpin B.D. the “Apostle of the North,” was rector here 1556-60. Here is a Catholic chapel, erected in 1876, and dedicated to Our Lady of Victories and St. Thomas; also a Wesleyan chapel. In connection with the Easington Recreation club is a reading room, well supplied with newspapers and periodicals, a billiard room and a cricket club. The charities are of £10 yearly value. There are three extensive collieries in the parish, viz.-South Hetton, Haswelt and Shotton. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor; and Rev. John Burdon, Cotsford Burdon esq. J.P. of Castle Eden, and R. L. Pemberton esq. D.L., J.P. are the chief landowners. The soil is generally a very poor clay; the subsoil is clayey in some parts, and in others gravelly and sandy. The crops are the usual cereals. The area of Easington township is 5,058 acres; rateable value, £7,171; the population in 1881 was 1,260, including 91 officers and inmates in the workhouse.
Horden Hall, situated near the sea, about 1 ½ miles south, is an ancient manorial residence, erected by the Conyers family about 1600: externally it is a plain building with mullioned windows, but has on the south side a projecting bay, the lower stage of which forms a porch, and has coupled columns on either side, supporting a cornice, over which are the arms of Conyers: the interior has a fine staircase, the balustrades of which are carved with foliage and figures, and the panelled drawing room has an exquisitely designed and executed chimney piece, elaborately carved with scroll work, shields of arms and festooning; the overmantel is divided into two portions by three demi-caryatids, supporting a frieze and cornice rising to the ceiling: now occupied by James Cruthers, farm bailiff to Major Burden.
